Book Description

1574980734 978-1574980738 January 1, 2000
This extensive how-to book emphasizes creative ways the extruder is being used in pottery studios. An impressive collection of more than 450 photos and drawings demonstrates the versatility and indispensability of the extruder and shows many ways for artists to improve and expand their work. You'll find numerous tips on selecting, buying, using and making dies for your extruder, as well as valuable inspiration for your work. Author Daryl Baird includes information on the history of the extruder, safety issues, how to set one up, and even issues pertaining to schools. His section on tips and the 9 step-by-step projects provide a great launching point for anyone interested in getting started with the extruder, or even figuring out what to do with the one they already have.
The Extruder Book, by Daryl Baird, is an extensive how-to book that emphasizes creative ways the clay extruder is being used in pottery studios. With a foreword by John Glick, The Extruder Book covers, in great detail, all commercially available extruders and associated equipment on the market today, ceramic artists using extruders, and includes a beautiful 96-page full-color gallery exhibit of works created with the extruder.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This practical book for potters using extruded clay in hand-built pottery covers much of the same ground as Diana Pancioli's Extruded Ceramics: Techniques, Projects, Inspirations (LJ 10/15/00) but offers more extensive information on equipment and studio setups. The sections on equipment and techniques are illustrated with black-and-white photos that are somewhat murky in places, but the color photographs in the gallery of pieces by international artists are excellent. Because this type of pottery requires special equipment, this book is suitable for academic or specialized arts and crafts collections.

Review

For potters and sculptors interested in extruding, this American Ceramic Society publication covers almost everything you need to know. -- Potters Guild of British Columbia Newsletter, November/December 2001

For the past twenty years there has been a gaping hole in available literature dealing with extrusion for studio potters. The Extruder Book fills the gap nicely, offering an overview of all aspects of extruders and extruding. Everyone from beginning students to experienced potters will find something here to inform and inspire them. --David Hendley, Potter

The author has managed to surpass my expectations in compiling ideas, theories, and hints about both extruders and dies. --Fred Sweet, Richland College, Dallas, Texas

5.0 out of 5 stars Answers the Question: What can you do with an extruder?, November 30, 2000

This review is from: The Extruder Book (Hardcover)
This is a great book for the person who wants to see the huge variety of things that can be made with an extruder, and who wants some ideas of how to make many of them. Some projects look straightforward (and could be made by a beginner) whereas others appear quite advanced. Some can be made with a smaller extruder, yet others required a much larger extruder. Many photos and drawings (some in color, some in black and white), with a lot of discussion about the various commercially available extruders and dies, as well as DIY extruders and dies. This is a comprehensive book, with a lot of discussion with a number of potters who actively use their extruders. It includes a number of "neat tricks" I found impressive. Definitely worth reading AND owning. This is the kind of book where you get ideas of things you want to make NOW, as you read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extruders are not just for Handles!, November 30, 2007
This review is from: The Extruder Book (Hardcover)
The Extruder Book is a delight to the clay craftsperson! Full of timely information and beautiful photographs, it brings into focus a tool that can be as valuable as the wheel or kiln.

*Expert instruction on making your own extruder dies
*Step by step photos on several demonstrations of various uses of extruder
*Comprehensive review of extruders available on the market

If you are like me, you may have viewed the extruder as one of those frills that my studio could do without. After all, I reasoned, I like to pull my own handles, and isn't that what those extruders are for? Boy, was I wrong! The Extruder Book hooked me from the first chapter aptly entitled, "what is an extruder and why have one?"

As I went on to learn, the extruder has many uses, from architectural ceramics to dishes, bowls and cups.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the Other Book, June 21, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Extruder Book (Hardcover)
There is another, newer book about extruders, but it doesn't come up to the kneecaps of this book. It contains everything you need to know about extruders. In fact, I ordered the other book also after this one and returned it because it had a lot of pictures and not as much information as this one...just had newer pictures.
