Book Description

September 2006
Al Hasp and Norm Carpenter are partners in a successful Orange County private investigation firm. When Norm, considered the brains of the outfit, announces he has become a born-again Christian and will be resigning, Al asks him to take one final case. It means going undercover in the organization of televangelist and faith healer Vincent Majors. Al believes Majors is a phony and when Majors? son-in-law, a pro basketball coach, is murdered, the case takes on added complications and then explodes at a Christian college in Southern California. Neither an attack on nor a promotion of fundamentalist Christianity, this is a refreshing look behind the scenes of one of America’s biggest businesses, in the entertaining guise of classical whodunit.

Eye of God is a knockout, something really fresh in detective fiction. Wise, witty, truly original. Jon L. Breen is so important as a reviewer that we forget how good a novelist he is. This is Edgar material for sure. -- Ed Gorman, Bad Money

Leave it to the inventive Jon L. Breen to come up with something entirely new in crime fiction, private eye partners who differ along religious lines. It’s a multiple-murder mystery involving a powerful television evangelist and his wayward daughter. --Dick Lochte, Lawless

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Edgar-winner Breen's disappointing new mystery, PI Al Hasp is appalled to discover that his longtime business partner, Norm Carpenter, wants to leave the company, having found the Lord and been born again. However, because a nationally-known TV minister based in nearby Costa Mesa, Calif., has just turned up needing somebody to discover who in his inner circle is working to betray him, Norm decides to stay on to work the case in a sense of Christian fellowship. Then the minister's daughter seeks help on her own case, which at first appears unrelated, but once the murders begin, it becomes clear there's a connection. Some amusing banter helps offset dislikable protagonists, a supporting cast of one-dimensional characters and an obvious suspect.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Lively Tale That Keeps You Guessing, September 11, 2006
By

This review is from: Eye of God: A Mystery (Paperback)
The nexus of the story is the conflict between Norm Carpenter, the brains of the private investigation shop, who has become a born again Christian, and his partner, Al Hasp, a backslider who hasn't seen the insides of a church since being a kid in Sunday School. Norm wants out of the business, while Al works desperately to keep him in. Al hopes taking on the televangelist's case will expose enough religious hypocrisy to disillusion his partner.

Breen's handling of the born-again Christian aspect rings mostly true, and his depiction of the televangelist's staff seems even-handed. Their motivations, for good or evil, appear logical. Throw in a couple of murders and some questionable antics at a Southern California Christian college, and you have a lively tale with enough twists to keep you guessing. Breen ends the book with a question that has troubled a lot of devout Christians.

Get this one if you like a good mystery with some overtones of controversy.
