Book Description

July 10, 1991

One day in the life of Christ.

Call it a tapestry of turmoil: A noisy pictorial in which the golden threads of triumph knot against the black, frazzled strings of tragedy.

Call it a symphony of emotions: A sunrise-to-sunset orchestration of extremes. One score is brassy with exuberance -- the next moans with sorrow.

Whatever you call it -- call it real. Author Max Lucado calls it "the second most stressful day in the life of our Savior." Before the morning becomes evening Jesus has reason to weep, then run, then shout, the curse, then praise, then doubt. Within a matter of moments his world is turned upside down.

Sound familiar? The pink slip comes. The doctor calls. The divorce papers arrive. The check bounces. The life that had been calm is now chaotic. The world that had been serene is now stormy. Assailed by doubts. Pummeled by demands.

If you've ever wondered if God in heaven can relate to you on earth, then read and re-read this pressure-packed day in the life of Christ. It is the only day, aside from the crucifixion, that all four gospels recorded. Lucado has interwoven their accounts in such a way that you will be assured that God knows how you feel.

And you will be assured that within every torrent there is a calm center -- a place you can stand when your world gets windy. The Eye of the Storm.

More About the Author

In just under two decades of writing, Max Lucado has accomplished more than most writers hope for in a lifetime. Most of his books have appeared on one or more best seller lists, including those published by the "New York Times," "USA Today," "Publishers Weekly," and the Christian Booksellers Association (CBA). Aside from hardcover books, Lucado's writings have also been published as children's books, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, music CDs, mass paperback booklets, apparel, giftware, bookmarks, calendars, study Bibles, workbooks, curricula, and plush products. In spring 2003, Hallmark/Dayspring Cards launched a new gift card line featuring excerpts from Lucado's writings--and has already sold more than one million cards.

All this success has drawn more than a little attention to a previously low-profile Texas author and minister. Lucado has been featured in a wide range of media, including "USA Today," "Larry King Live," and "NBC Nightly News." He has spoken at the National Prayer Breakfast before the President of the United States. He has traveled with internationally renowned musicians as a special speaker on their music tours, such as the highly successful "Come Together & Worship Tour" (sponsored by Chevrolet) with Grammy Award-winning artists Michael W. Smith and Third Day.

Journey to the Top
Lucado was born in 1955 in San Angelo, Texas, and raised in Andrews, Texas, the youngest of four children. His father was an Exxon oil field mechanic who, Lucado remembers, always smelled of grease cleaner. "It makes it easy for me to see a God who is loving and kind--because my dad was," he says. His mother was a nurse who grew up working in the cotton fields.

Lucado went through a period of rebellion against his parents' values and their God during his teens and into college. But it wasn't long before he found himself drawn back to his roots, back to God. He married, spent time serving as a missionary in Brazil, and returned to the States, where he began working as a church minister and writing on the side.

Secret to Success
From all accounts, Max Lucado is not a man consumed by sales, awards, and achievements. He often turns down media interviews since they impede on family and ministry commitments. He spends the bulk of his week serving as senior minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. And he is truly surprised by his own success--more impressed by his one-in-a-million wife and three amazing daughters than by his successful writing career.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to seek calm in chaos., November 21, 2002
By
Once again Max Lucado uses seemingly bland every day events - forgetting the alarm code, misplacing a contact lens, or just reaching out to family during long and strenuous trips - to communicate how God works in seemingly hopeless or hope draining situations. He divides the book into three different subjects of conversation (and reading Max Lucado feels very much like you are having a conversation with him) - Stress of Demands, Storms of Doubt, and Sting of Failure - offering up plenty of Scriptural backed up anecdotes on how to better understand God in action, even when he seems the most distant. Some examples touched on matters that are very important to me, others just seemed quaint and diverting, but little more. Fans of the preacher who writes or the writer that preaches will need no encouraging to give this book a look, others unfamiliar with him should give it a look as well. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars We can know He also knows, August 14, 1999
By A Customer
here is the best work from a wordsmith of the highest rank. God has used max to show us that when, not if, "storms" come into our lives, there is a Savior who hurts along with us, relating His experience with ours. we are able to see along with max how a real Jesus dealt with real issues. storms that seem like they will destroy. we are able to see that the confidence He had can be ours also. we can find a calmness inside the middle of the storm, its eye. we are able to see a picture of a God who is bigger than the "storm" over it, seeing that we grow in ways we never dreamed and learn to trust in Him through it all. in the end, peace...that His children are safe and He is in total control. i have a standing promise... if you buy this book and do not like it... i will buy it from you. it is that powerful! (55 satisfied 0 refunds) you will be 56. be blessed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Stormy Day..., December 18, 2000
Lucado chronicles a day in the life of Jesus. Not just any day however. The day he has chose is probably the second most stressful day that Jesus lived - only the day of his crucifixion would have been worse.

Through his descriptions backed up by scripture, Lucado portrays Jesus as both human and the Son of God. A greater understanding of what Jesus did and why he did those things on the day that he fed the 5,000, turned away a crowd, was transfigured and walked on water. It was a busy day for Jesus and his disciples.

By including many stories about common people, Lucado not only explains why Jesus did the things he did, but also why we do the things we do. He draws parallels between Jesus and us to aid our understanding of our actions and his. At the bottom of everything is that Jesus died for our sins. In the final chapters, Lucado addresses the question: If God loves us so much, why does he allow us to sin? The answer is simple: God gave us the choice to not sin and love him. In order for God to understand the pressures of living a human life with so many choices, he came to Earth in the form of his son Jesus Christ.

Lucado also includes a series of study questions at the back of this book allowing it to be used as the curriculum for a study group or for personal reflection. The questions are well written and thought provoking. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Jesus Christ. It will help them to understand just who the man was.

Why 4 stars?: I have always enjoyed Lucado's writings and this book is no different. It is easy to read and always stays interesting. The stories are easy to relate to your own life. I have a few minor differences in our theologies, but nothing major, still that is the only thing keeping it from getting 5 stars.
