5.0 out of 5 stars Gore Gore Music For Beginners, June 16, 2002
By
This review is from: Eyeball Popping Sounds of (Audio CD)
Finally! The wickedly, weird, way-out sounds of the Godfather of Gore himself, Herschell Gordon Lewis. If you are looking at this CD on Amazon then you probably already have a clue to HGL's legendary status in the horror archives of film, but just in case you don't, HGL (along with Dave Friedman) produced and directed the very first gore film ever, BLOOD FEAST. He went on to produce many more Gore films including "Color Me Blood Red", "Gruesome Twosome", & "Wizard of Gore", as well as dozens of other drive-in flicks from the 60's that have since become cult classics ("Suburban Roulette", "Year of the Yahoo"). On top of all the other duties he performed on these films, HGL also composed the music as well. "Eye Popping Sounds..." is basically the complete musical score of "Blood Feast" & "2000 Maniacs". The "Blood Feast" tunes will complete any haunted house mood at Halloween. It features the mesmerizing kettle drums that play bombastically throughout the film, as well as tons of chilling screams. The music of "2000 Maniacs" is completely opposite. Twangy banjos and "heee haw" shouting hayseeds create a festive mood that will set the tone for any backwoods hootenany! The real gems on the disc though are found at the end (32 tracks in all). The theme songs from "Suburban Roulette", "She Devils on Wheels", "The Girl The Body & The Pill", and "Blast Off Girls" are all devilishly clever and mirror the psychedelic & go-go music of the sixties. HGL also writes the liner notes as well. If you are a fan of HGL, this is a "must have" item. If you are slightly curious, go ahead and give it a spin. Anyone who likes cult films won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: NOT SUITABLE FOR ANYONE WITH A HEART CONDITION..., June 23, 2004

Pamela Scarangello (Middletown, NJ USA) - See all my reviews

Ah, yes! How can I describe the music written by Herschell Gordon Lewis, cinema's Godfather of Gore? Well, it doesn't take a genius to realize that "The Eye Popping Sounds" is a kooky cornucopia of sonic schlock. As a novelty item for cult fiends everywhere, this album must not be heard by anyone with a heart condition, since all 37 tracks drip a slimy sanguine red. While the score for 1963's "Blood Feast" is dominated by a monotonous pendulum kettledrum and a brooding organ, "Two Thousand Maniacs" is a non-stop country jamboree for bluegrass buckaroos. Other twisted tunes include "Get Off the Road," a groovy motorcycle anthem, "The Pill," a classic rock track that makes a shocking salute to birth control, and "Suburban Roulette," a sardonic lounge song that can make Sammy Davis Jr. grin from ear to ear! Highly recommended to the most hungry horror movie fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gore-tastic, August 11, 2008
This review is from: Eyeball Popping Sounds of (Audio CD)
Not the best fidelity, but a whole lot of fun. Banjo music, weird trailers, and the sounds of gore. I got mine signed by the man himself, but even without an autograph you get a dose of the godfather's personality through his detailed liner notes.

Check out a short interview with Mr. Lewis in The MAD DOG MOVIES Podcast episode 7!
