Great acoustic songs that deserve a place in your collection,
By Sean O'Neill (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eyeballs (Audio CD)
This is a great album that I have listened to at least 10 times in the week since it arrived. I found out about Dan Potthast in an unusual way. I was listening to the Ska channel on Spinner.com when they played one of his songs ("I Went In"). I had never heard of Dan before, but the song was so catchy with its mixture of upbeat ska and acoustic rock that I was immediately hooked. I went to Amazon.com and bought the album based on just that one song. His songs are almost all just him and a guitar (some songs have a bit more accompaniment) and yet they all have completely distinct feels. I have been playing guitar for years, so I always appreciate an artist that can use their instruments in new and creative ways. Unlike bands like Spin Doctors or The Outfield where every single song sounds exactly like every other song, Dan Potthast has used his guitar as an auditory palette to craft a host of unique and captivating songs. His voice has a very distinctive tremolo to it that reminds me of Elvis Costello. He has quite a vocal range that he uses to alter the mood and tempo of his songs. My personal favorites include `Oil Change' (a slower acoustic rock song about maintaining your car/life), `I Set Sail' (ska-beat tune with catchy vocals) and `I Went In'. In fact, I find it difficult to even pick a few songs out of this collection. The lyrics, vocals, and guitar all combine to create a breadth of songs that complement each other while remaining distinctive. All together a very satisfying album. I highly recommend it. Sean

Amazing acoustic, third wave ska!,
By
This review is from: Eyeballs (Audio CD)
When I first picked up this album several months ago, I was very excited to see what the lead singer and song writer of MU330 had done. I had always been fond of his work, and have often described Dan Potthast as the Rivers Cuomo of third wave ska. When I first popped it into my cd player, I did not know what to expect. What I got was an album full of self-expressive, heart filled, finely crafted acoustic ska! I never imagined what such a thing could even be and was not disappointed. Like in MU330, Dan's music always focuses on super catchy melodies, and usually includes harmonies. The main instrument is the acoustic guitar, which is frequently, but not always, backed up with the drums, trumpet, and even the harmonica. Some of the highlights of the album include the fast paced "Eyeballs" (which is a song about paranoia and distrust in relationships), the catchy tune "My Favorite Song", and the ballad about sailing and love "I've Set Sail". My personal favorite is "Staring At Payphones", a unique song involving a restaurant called Betty's, payphones and nightmares.I recommend this album to anyone who likes MU330, Weezer, any band with harmonies, acoustic, and great third wave ska.

This CD is awesome in so many ways. I love the style of music that Dan has. The songs are fun and catchy. The best part is that he isn't well known and isn't played on the radio yet, so you won't ever get tired of listening to his songs.
