Editorial Reviews

Brick Records is proud to present the REKS & Hazardis Soundz collaborative album 'Eyes Watching God'. This concept vinyl has the duo showcasing a contrast between good and evil beginning with a God side and finishing with a Devil side. The CD artwork features a dual-image cover- showing both the 'good' and 'evil' sides, depending on what angle you view it from. The Massachusetts lyricist linked up with the Queens native in South Florida to complete the album during the past year, and they enlisted N.O.R.E, Saigon, Fredro Starr, Termanology, Ruste Juxx, Dutch Rebelle and others to add to their cause. The result is a highly conscious and fiercely political album. "Working with Reks on this project has been a great experience. The creative process was organic and effortless. We were in the studio together for every song on the album and it was as simple as me showing Reks a beat and him picking up the pen and writing. Nothing was ever forced. Really proud of this body of work and I'm very excited for the world to hear it." says Haz. REKS adds, "It felt natural working with Haz. He has a great ear for music and was interested in me trying beats I am not accustomed to spitting on. It helped me diversify myself a bit".

Before we get into the album it is only right to say Reks has been one of the most consistent, bow-throwing emcees flying comfortably under the radar for over a decade. His staple in the "underground" hip-hop scene is sharp and holds years of content, persistance, hard work, and accuracy. If you are not familiar with Reks' discography and body of work since the early 00's, than you are on the wrong website and should probably do your homework; now. Reks returns with 'Eyes Watching God' released 7/15/14. This is probably one of his best bodies of work for many reasons, which you may agree after spinning a few times.

The first recognizable detail was how the tracklist is split in half - the first 8 tracks are the 'God Side' and the next half of the album is the 'Devil Side'. This immediately gave the listener an idea to wrap their head around, and how Reks' attack method on the content overall would be approached. Notably, the cover is also in direct relation to the albums theme, containing a split image of Reks. Presumably this split-personality cover/tracklist leaves fans hungry to see what Reks is bringing to the table schematically.

'Eyes Watching God' has features from N.O.R.E, Saigon, Termanology, Rustee Juxx, and other notable emcees. This is not far off from previous Reks projects considering he usually has a healthy amount of solid lyricists featuring on his canvas. In terms of production, Hazardis Soundz took this one under his microscope and delivered straight science. He offers a wide range of sounds throughout the album, and really stayed close to the albums theme of light vs. dark. Tracks like "Unholy" and "Devils Clutches" are the noticeably grimy, gritty, street-feeling drops.

I've been a fan of Reks since Grey Hairs which was a classic. Since then, I've liked some of his albums more than others but there all good. This album is no exception and he really showed out on it. The beats are good, his flow is on point, and his lyrics are complex. This album is tied for my favorite Reks album, tied with Grey Hairs.
