Editorial Reviews

Welcome To The Gridiron Of The Damned! Huge hulking bodies throw themselves at each other, while a tiny lithe body runs between them for the goal! No, it's not a game of Football, it's Sena Kobayakawa trying to evade the monstrous Ha-Ha brothers down the halls of Deimon High School! But wait! Sena's incredible skills at not getting caught have been spotted by the devilish (possibly actually demonic) captain of the school's embryonic American style football team, and when Sena asks to be the teams manager, he gets thrust onto the field as a running back instead! But there are two BIG catches - first, to keep the identity of their new "star" player an absolute secret, Yoichi makes Sena wear an opaque visor on his helmet and gives him the alias of "Eyeshield 21." And the second catch? Well, in order to hit his fastest "speed of light" running mode, Sena usually has to be absolutely terrified... not that THAT will be a problem with the monstrous players that he'll soon find himself running from! The insanity hits the streets when the feet meet the cleats in EYESHIELD 21 - Collection 1!!

Packaging & Content: You get 13 episodes of Eyeshield 21 on two discs, in a regular 2-disc plastic DVD case. There are 145 episodes of this show in total, and they are worth watching at least up till the eighties. (I've seen up to about 100, and they were milking it pretty badly toward the end!) 'Special Features' consist of trailers for other Sentai Filmworks releases. (They are part of what once was ADV films.)

About the subtitles: I, too, generally prefer English-dubbed anime. BUT not in this case. They could never find replacements for the voices of Kurita or Komisubi, let alone Atsushi TAMURA as the voice of Hiruma! If you gotta have English, Toonami made a horribly dubbed and expurgated version of Episode 1. Find it, watch it, then shudder in loathing and be thankful for subtitles. The dialog is rarely so fast-paced as to make reading it awkward.

Changes from the original: Hiruma's swearing seems to have been eliminated. (He calls Kurita "Man Pig" instead of D--- Fatty, for example.) Also, the commercial-break "football clinic" segments have had the live-action video removed and replaced with series artwork, probably due to licensing issues with the NFL.

About the show itself: You don't need to like or understand football to enjoy this show. (REAL players don't develop super powers, anyway!) Eyeshield 21 is a feel-good series loaded with slapstick comedy, terrific characters, action, drama, suspense, and and even a tiny hint at romance. Sena is an undersized weakling who has developed super speed by running away from bullies (or, rather, from running their errands.) Now he is starting at a new school where he hopes life will be different.

I live in a country where no one plays Amefuto and when I saw the game on Tv I never understood what they were trying to do. But not knowing anything about the game is not important as you can learn a bit about the game as Sena learns more about the game he was dragged into. It was one of the best anime about a sport I have ever watched and rightnow is my favorite. I say give it a shot. Though I have to say it was disaapointing to find out the DVD has only 13 episodes. If I had realized it before buying it I would reconsider it. It was also frustarating to notice that I can't watch it in other languages.

It is a good set of DVDs and if you love eyeshield 21 then this is a good buy. I was disappointed however to see that this DVD case was not a box but just a small regular DVD case that was able to hold two DVDs. The other thing is that I think that it is too expensive to sell two DVDs that holds only a total 13 episodes (not even one season) for like 30 to 50 dollars. Well I knew it had only 13 episodes but that was only because I really wanted an eyeshield 21 DVD in my midst. If you really really really desire eyeshield 21 DVDs then start with this collection 1 because it is the beginning. If you love football and anime then you will love the humor and passion that are included in the Eyeshield series.

Kanto final and Christmas Bowl?
Sadly, no. There are only 145 episodes. But, if you, like me want to see what happens after the final game with Ojo, the manga goes on even though the anime does not.

Dub exists but isn't being released?
The English dub aired on the free on-demand Toonami Jetstream as a joint effort with NFL Rush on December 17, 2007,[2] however no more episodes will be dubbed, as the deal with NFL Rush fell through in 2008.

In other words the NFL is being greedy and we'll probably never see an English dub... Read More
