Like going to a museum on the American Revolution,
By Lawrance M. Bernabo (The Zenith City, Duluth, Minnesota) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Eyewitness: American Revolution (Eyewitness Books) (Hardcover)
This DK Eyewitness book on the "American Revolution" makes for a nice supplement for young students who are studying the subject in history class. There is certainly basic information about the battles of Breed's Hill, Saratoga, and Yorktown, as well as looks at the Declaration of Independence, symbols of freedom, spies and traitors, George Washington, and other topics, but the primary attraction here are the period illustrations and historic artifacts presented, most of which come from the extensive collection of the Smithsonian Institution. There is something to be said for a 1766 Williamsburg teapot that declares "No Stamp Act" or the 1775 proclamation by King George III that declared the American colonies to be in rebellion. You will also find photographs of the first British flag ever captured by an American force, the oldest American fighting vessel in existence, and the designs of both the original Purple Heart and the Seal of the United States. Beyond that there are portraits of all of the major figures, both political and military, on both sides, and dozens of other things you could only see in a museum. All of the photographs have informative captions, provided by author Stuart Murray, that really help make reading this volume just like taking a tour of a museum. Young readers should get a basic understanding of the history of the American Revolution from their textbook before they enjoy flipping through the pages of this wonderfully illustrated volume.

This book shows such a variety of artifacts from the Revolutionary War, it's just amazing! All of the photographs and illustrations are very clear and it makes it easy to really understand what things were like back then.

Beautiful full-color illustrations and photos!,

This review is from: Eyewitness: American Revolution (Eyewitness Books) (Hardcover)
All the DK Eyewitness books are page after page of photos, with lots of good info packed in. Since there aren't many photos from the American Revolution era, more paintings and drawings are used here, but they are all very detailed and colorful. Items which I've heard about but never seen before, such as Spanish silver coins that the Colonists would literally cut in half to make change, are shown in close-up. Very educational for kids, and adults!

The books are very well done, pictures and timelines inclusive but are targetting younger readers. As an adult I must admit MOST of the content were things I did not know but thats more of a review of our schools than this book.
For your 10-12 year old age group they are the best. For adults they are interesting and beautifully pictured but brief. Im glad I bought them but I wish my expectations had been set as to how short they are.

By Laurie J. Neverman "The Common Sense Woman" (Denmark, WI United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)

As always, loaded with photos and illustration. There are some maps and a timeline, a glossary and a Find Out More" section with some web sites and places to visit. My boys love the DK books. I good overview on the subject, but I would definitely combine it with other books/materials to cover the war in more depth.

Taxation Without Represeentation,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Eyewitness: American Revolution (Eyewitness Books) (Hardcover)
The book is non fiction. The plot is that the British are doing taxation without representation in the 1700s.
My favorite things in the book are some of the battles it tells about, like the Battle of Long Island. I also like the book because of all the facts it has and all the information. The flag illustrations are cool too. I highly recommend this book for people who like facts and are above age 8.

Building a library for a granddaughter,

This review is from: American Revolution (DK Eyewitness Books) (Hardcover)
I bought this for my 12-year old granddaughter as part of an effort to build a meaningful library for her -- I was appalled that the school hadn't even begun to teach her basic American history. She read it through, so I guess that the effort was worthwhile.

DK Eyewitness books are excellent teaching tools, for anyone.
This book on the American Revolution does a bang-up job, with illustrations and captions that convey the information straight into your little one's eyeballs. In addition, the book sets up the context for the Revolution, including the dawn of industry in colonial America and the trade networks that were devloping. Also includes brief information on warfare with other European powers and frontier Indians as a prelude to Revolution. Great timeline, and simply an EXCELLENT glossary, including terms like: apothecary, apprentice, artillery, barracks...typhus, Union Jack, and volunteer. Perfect for visual learners -- put this book right into their hands.

The Famous Historical Battle,

This review is from: American Revolution (DK Eyewitness Books) (Hardcover)
If you're an all-out history buff like me, then you're gonna wanna read this book. It has a lot of details about American History in the mid to late 1700's and what life was like, especially during times of war and suffering. I would recommend this book to all the people I know, unless they're not into history like I am.
