4.0 out of 5 stars A Great learning book for children, November 16, 2003
By
As with all the eyewitness books its a great factual book for children to learn. The book is full of many pictures each with annotations describing in simple detail what is going on in the picture. The books are full of knowledge and enjoyable for both children and adults alike!

I recommened buying this book for your child if they are wanting to learn about battle.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome picture book about battle, February 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Why should a reader acquire "Battle (DK Eyewitness)"?

1. Because it is a DK Eyewitness book! That's reason enough. As a reviewer for the New York Times once wrote: "A DK book is a mini-museum." This time the "museum" reveals "battle" and its various forms through the ages in the Western world (Europe and America, but here mostly Europe). Notes about Asia and Africa are sprinkled throughout the book, but the predominant information is Euro-centric.

2. The minute detail of battle is visited in tactical order from the big picture to the most detailed aspect of war. For example the first pages picture art relics showing aspects of war: Greek Hoplite soldiers dressing for battle, Cypriot soldiers in spear-at-the-ready pose, Egyptians in war chariots.

3. After defining battle, the book goes on to present two-page and sometimes four-page spreads on various components needed to have battle: Infantry of the line, Heavy cavalry, Weapons training, Badges of rank, Colors, Supply and transportation, A soldier's pack, Reconnaissance, Field guns, Rapid-fire weapons, High-angle fire, Artillery instruments, Bows and arrows, Swords, Firearms, Close combat, and so on.

4. Ending with Rewards of battle, Sick and wounded, Memories of war,

5. Concluding with World War II, Vietnam, and Resources and websites for more information.

6. DK books always includes a glossary and and Index.

7. Since this is a new DK book, a clip-art CD of Battle and an 18 x 24 inch, pull-out poster highlighting key components of the book are included.

For those unfamiliar with DK books, each page is packed with equal amounts of pictures, illustrations, maps, displays and then words. Each page is a feast for both eye and brain, visual and mental stimulation, whatever the subject.

For the dabbler in aspects of war, this book is a no-brainer!
