Book Description

July 1, 2000 8 and up3 and upDK Eyewitness Books
Discover in close-up the enchanting and secret life of butterflies and moths.

Here is an original and exciting look at the natural history of butterflies and moths. Stunning real-life photographs provide a unique "eyewitness" view of the behavior of these complex and vividly beautiful insects, their structure and life cycle, where they live and feed, and how they protect themselves. See a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, how silk moths make silk, a caterpillar eating its own eggshell, and butterflies that have become extinct. Learn how a caterpillar can frighten off predators, why some adult moths never eat, which butterfly migrates the length of a subcontinent, and how to breed butterflies and moths. Discover how a caterpillar transforms itself into a chrysalis, which butterfly lives with ants, why butterflies and moths often mimic each other, how a chrysalis can look like a dead leaf, and much, much more.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8 The remarkable beauty of the many rare and exotic moths and butterflies portrayed here will appeal to naturalists of all ages. This well-organized, profusely illustrated introduction/survey briefly explains the differences between butterflies and moths; compares them to other orders of insects; discusses their life cycles; describes some of the physical or behavioral characteristics of over 200 world species; examines endangered species, migration, hibernation patterns and defense mechanisms; and offers tips on observing the insects in the field and rearing them at home. The brief text in each short chapter is surrounded by a dozen or more clear color photographs of a variety of moths and butterflies and caterpillars and pupae against a clean white background. Extended captions in small print appear under each photo and identify the animal portrayed by common as well as by scientific name, cite its geographical range, and supplement the text with bits of additional information. The text is succinctly written and thorough. The book's numerous color photos are excellent; however, the small print used in the captions may discourage some readers. Jourdan's Butterflies and Moths Around the World (Lerner, 1981) provides more in-depth information on about 50 different species; however, Whalley's book describes the characteristics of about four times as many butterflies and moths, making it a useful addition to natural history collections. This review is from: Eyewitness: Butterfly & Moth (Eyewitness Books) (Hardcover)
Truly beautiful colorful pictures with information even adults can learn from. I have honestly never seen a bad Eyewitness book-- the pictures are always captivating. We paired this book with a butterfly hatching kit and my niece loved her gift.

3.0 out of 5 stars Plain, plain, plain: When will this book ever end?, September 12, 1999
By A Customer
I love Eyewitness books, but I thought this book was boring. This book has some obeious facts about butterfly life cycles, some butter fly facts, and some moth facts. But when you read the book it seems like the book will never end because the book is so repetitive.
