Book Description

June 1, 2000 8 and up DK Eyewitness Books
Discover the history of costumes -- from ancient loincloths and Roman togas to bustles, bonnets and haute couture.

Here is an original and exciting look at the colorful history of clothes and fashion. Superb, full-color photographs of original clothes, accessories and ornaments worn by real-life men, women and children offer a unique and revealing "eyewitness" view of the history of costume. See brooches and hairpins worn by Roman women, the opulence of Renaissance clothes and jewels, 17th-century fans, gloves, and bags, a hippie father and son, Queen Victoria's stockings, and a Viking shoe. Learn what false fat bellies were stuffed with, how Romans folded their togas, how the discovery of the New World changed European costume, and when the starch was first used to stiffen fabric. Discover how textiles have affected fashion, when men wore stockings, what a farthingale was used for, what the first bathing suits looked like, why women used to wear corsets, and much, much more.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-8-- A fascinating historical overview of clothing. True to the series format, this one blends closeup, full-color photographs of period clothing and accessories with brief snippets of text that explain the item's significance and purpose. The impact of changing fashion is made dramatic by the inclusion of new photos of models wearing theatrical recreations of historic costumes. Some of the eye-catching two-page spreads show the elaborate underpinnings of mid-19th century women's clothing, bridal garb through the years, swimwear, hats, children's attire, etc. Other books on the subject exist, but few have this title's visual appeal and browsability. Although it lacks a global view, concentrating instead on European trends, it should add significantly to an understanding of what people wore and why. --Denise Anton Wright, Illinois State University, Normal

4.0 out of 5 stars short but interesting October 3, 2010

Although this book was short and not as detailed as some, I am definately glad I purchased it. Lots of neat trivia and I liked the pictures of both authentic items and the photos of the costume recreations. I will definately keep this in my collection

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book September 28, 2000
By Jenna
Format:Hardcover
This is a good, easy reference book. I highly recommend it for grade school children who may not be up to the task of reading long explanations about historical costumes. It covers a lot of time--from Adam and Eve to the 1990's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Content January 15, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I do not agree that this volume should have been called, "Costume." You will not find witches and vampires in here, just period clothing. However, I bought it because I knew it was mostly period wear. It has a decent amount of random facts scattered throughout the book, but I felt like they could have gone a little more in depth with the details of the time. Great photos!
Overall, a good buy, just wanted a little more.

This is a visual guide. It hits the highlights of many historical eras. I bought it for my 10-year-old daughter. She likes it very much.
