Featuring an extra-sturdy library binding!

Here is a spectacular, thought-provoking, and highly informative guide to the fascinating story of medicine. Superb color photographs of medical instruments and experiments, plus modern internal imaging, offer a unique "eyewitness" view of the amazing discoveries that have transformed our understanding of medical science. See a set of false teeth from ancient Rome, how amputations were carried out before anesthetics, what the first microscopes looked like, what a crash cart is used for, and how the periwinkle is used in the treatment of leukemia. Learn how Charles II of England attempted to cure more than 92,000 people of scrofula, how pills were made in the 19th century, how the use of antiseptics became widespread, and what happens during microsurgery. Discover how unsuccessful physicians in ancient Egypt had their hands cut off, how black ants were once used instead of stitches to seal wounds, and why the work. And much, much more!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6?In typical "Eyewitness" fashion, these titles explore two areas of science through clear, full-color photographs and lots of concise, well-organized text. Technology deals with how the development of machines and materials has affected the areas of communication, farming, medicine, and more. Endoscopes, food mixers, fax machines, and robots are presented, as well as everyday items like the BicTM pen and the hollow tennis racquet. Medicine travels from ancient times to the future, addressing alternative treatments, modern drugs, fads in health care, diagnostic techniques, etc. What really stands out are the numerous examples of tools of the trade, like the 18th-century brass enema syringe and the 20th-century electronic hand. Both volumes feature lots of white space, great photography, and clear explanations of terms.?Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY
