Catchy hooks and hard rocking sound goes the distance!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Eyewitness (Audio CD)
Shades Apart has evolved from a hard-edged punk band to a very capable rock and roll band. The tunes found all throughout "Eyewitness" are all very competent, cohesive, well written, well-thought out pieces of work, and they rock as well. (A hard feat to come by) Songs like "Stranger by the Day", "Sputnik"(Watching Over You), "Valentine", "Know It All" "Speed of Light", and "Chasing Daydreams" are all very radio-ready tunes, and tunes that should be all over the radio right now. Shades Apart is the first really promising "new" band on the rock music scene in 1999 thus far. Their potent combination of strong lyrics, great hooks and musicianship similar to Fuel (minus the monotonous "tortured soul" cries) and catchy melodies is the formula for great songwriting and a band who deserves their time at the top. If you're looking for a great summmer record, a great rock record, or just a taste of something new, Shades Apart is your band and "Eyewitness" is your album.

This is the best album I've heard in a long time!,

This review is from: Eyewitness (Audio CD)
I've been a Shades Apart fan since their first album in 1987, and I have to say: THIS IS THE BEST. This album rocks, regardless of what kind of music you're into. Shades Apart have experimented a lot with their sound over the years, each album becoming more melodic, expressive and complex. But they found the magic formula with Eyewitness: They have managed to create a sound that's punchy and rough-edged enough to satisfy their "old school" punk rock fans, but with plenty of style, catchy melodies and complicated rythyms to please the rest. These guys are incredible musicians and songwriters--but you have to see them live to fully appreciate their talent. If you like energetic, singable tunes backed by rocking guitar and incredible drums (think Stewart Copeland with two extra hands), go see Shades Apart. But no comparisons can adequately describe their sound--they're one of a kind! Valentine, Stranger by the Day and 100 Days are especially memorable, but Chasing Daydreams, Starry Night and Time Machine really resonate. Once you listen to Eyewitness, you won't be able to take it out of your CD player.

After hearing that they got signed to Universal, I assumed their sound would change, but I was suprised it was for the better. This is a must have. Get their older Revelation stuff if you are into the metal/punk thing.

These 3 Guys Can Rock!,

I bought this cd because I heard "Stranger by the Day" over the waves and was immeadiately captured by it. It is an absolutely great song for anyone who loves to hear both great music and clear sounding and well written lyrics as well. This group's music reminds me of a modern day "The Knack", who created another great song way back called " My Sharona" ( for you younger listeners ). This group consisting of only 3 members put out a full, complete beautiful rocking sound which really grows on you. I highly recommend this cd. Enjoy it! I do.

About six months after Valentine stopped being played so often, a song came out by the name of Stranger by the Day. Whe I realized it was Shades Apart I bought the CD simply for those two songs nd it's now my favorite CD. Their songs emind me a lot of Live and Tonic, only better.

Shades Apart falls under the 'Hardcore Punk' genre of today's music and I have to agree. I have just recently been purchasing music that are along the lines of Shades Apart, Weezer, and Creed (as opposed to my obsession with Queen). I remember hearing the song 'Valentine' a few years back and all that stuck in my head was the chorus lyrics. I typed in "Valentine" on search engines and finally found the band that produced such a wonderful song. 'Valentine', along with 'Stranger by the Day' and 'Chasing Daydreams' are my top three songs on this album. It truly stands all by itself in originality and poise. The riffs and lyrics are truly poetic, but still has that head-banging, foot-thumping pulse that rides along with it. Great album to blast in your car! I strongly, strongly recommend it.

I found Shades Apart by accident. I lost a radio contest in 2000 and was awarded a consolation prize of a t-shirt and 2 cd's. One of them happened to be "Eyewitness"It was summer, and I rolled my windows down, opened the sunroof and listened to the whole album. Shades Apart brings me to a carefree sing-along mood. I love this album, and I'm here at amazon today to buy the others!

better than expected,

It was merely a fluke for me to find out who these guys were. I was just remembering band names I have heard on the radio a while back, and for some odd reason I remember the band shades apart. Well I check on the internet for songs to download, and came across "Stranger by the Day". So I'm like, yeah I heard this song before, and I liked it. So I went out and bought this album. Listened to it once, sound catchy, and soon bought "Seeing Things" shortly after. I liked both albums, but this one was far more superior than "Seeing Things". Even the revamped song, "Second Chances" on this album is better than on "Seeing Things". Although, I don't know why they put the same song on 2 albums. Other songs are outstanding. "One Starry Night" is perfect. It provides an atmosphere w/ the saxes of a bluesy type sound. It really is more enjoyable while listening outside on a starry night. "Chasing Daydreams" is another favorite. It has a subtle mood to it, and keeps you thinking. Dude, if you don't have this album, and like any type of alt rock. Get it!!!! The only reason that these guys aren't as popular as they should be, is b/c that they've been around awhile and nobody really likes old bands. "Eyewitness" is a musical masterpiece.

Stories and words conveyed through music!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Eyewitness (Audio CD)
These guys rock! they take stories similar to 50's B movies or 40's radio sci-fi serials and put them into song. they are not the same generic stuff thats out there, it might take a few listens before you really really get into it, but trust me, this is some great stuff!
