Book Description

September 15, 1998 0789435918 978-0789435910
Featuring pronunciation, a menu guide, a mini-dictionary, hotel information, and emergency phrases.

After dining in Greece, you tell the waiter, "Ta sinharitiria moo ston mayira!" (My compliments to the chef!) This easy-to-follow phrase book opens with an explanation of the Greek alphabet and its sounds, and moves into useful phrases and words. These words and phrases are spelled out in the letters of the Greek alphabet, but are accompanied by a modified version of the standard system of romanization--the way Greek characters are written in our alphabet. Another highlight of this handy phrase book is a detailed menu guide that runs down numerous Greek specialties--printed in Greek letters as they would be listed on an actual menu--how they would be pronounced, and most importantly, what they actually are. Enjoy your time in Greece by taking along the best and most useful phrase book to be found. Whether you're trying to order dinner or get back to your hotel, you cannot make your way without knowing what to say, and the Eyewitness Travel Guide Phrase Books are the perfect guide for tongue-tied tourists. These compact, user-friendly books fit right into your pocket or purse, and meet the communications needs of the tourist and business traveler alike. Based on an innovative system of imitated pronunciation, phrases are organized into logical and practical divisions, including time; food and drink; air travel; bus, taxi, and subway information; shopping; health and medical care; and much more. Typical replies to questions you may be asked, as well as signs and instructions you're likely to see or hear, are also given. The guides also include a carefully selected mini-dictionary, and useful conversion tables translating distance, clothing sizes, and weight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn Greek the right way!, May 10, 1999
By A Customer
I have searched for a book/audio course that would teach me the language rather than help me memorize phrases. All the packages at the library were for travelers so they could make sure they "get a room with a bathroom." I wanted to learn the language to be fluent. This book/audio teaches you the language! It includes exercises, both written and oral, as well as an essential grammar section. The four accompanying tapes are very well done, easy to understand, and follow the 290+ page book. If you're looking to learn the language, you can't beat this course for the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Useful Greek in a Short Time, December 3, 2002

(REAL NAME)
In preparation for a trip, I checked out several book and tape courses in Greek. The Hugo course struck the right balance between total immersion on the one hand, and just learning select phrases on the other. This series will give you a quick grounding in the language though it is not as complete as the Barron Foreign Service Institute tape set. The Hugo audio quality is much better than Barron's, and the speakers are quite a bit friendlier. (The Barron series sounded like it was recorded in a garage and the speaker was about as friendly as a police interrogator).

After working with these tapes for about two months I went to Athens. I'm pleased to say they worked. People could understand me without trouble. However, one gentleman asked me where I learned Greek. I sounded like I was stuck in the 1950s. Perhaps it is the difference between Katheravousa ("official") and Demotic ("popular") Greek. So, I may have sounded a little stiff, but most everyone understood me.

The bottom line: this is the best Greek tape and book course I found for someone looking to learn a lot of useful Greek in a short time. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much needed tool to learn of brush up on your Greek., August 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Although I am Greek I did not pay attention in Greek school at age 10.So I never learned to conjugate verbs properly. I understood most Greek but probably spoke like a two year old when in Greece. This is my second copy of this book! So I was thrilled to find it on Amazon. My first copy is still in Santorini. I listen tothe tapes when I'm driving or walking on the beach. Sometimes I listen to the basic verbs over and over again.I was chastised by a Greek boyfriend that I MUST learn GREEK VERBS. So, with this book, I intend to speak correctly when I return to Santorini next fall. The conversations are very basic.Havingbeen a French major I appreciate the way this book is laid out.Buy this book and you WILL learn basic Greek. Yassou!!Ena kalo vivlio!
