Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Tyndale House hopes to repeat its megasuccess with Left Behind by signing Rosenberg, an evangelical Christian from an Orthodox Jewish background, for a third apocalyptic novel. Rosenberg sets his events several years after 9/11 and picks up the plot line from his The Last Days. A coup in Russia may have left beautiful CIA agent Erin McCoy dead, even as her fiancé, presidential adviser Jon Bennett, watches his "Oil for Peace" initiative fall apart. As Russia prepares for war, Israel faces annihilation and Babylon regains its original splendor, Dr. Eliezer Mordechai, former head of the Mossad and now a Christian, reflects, "The Scriptures were coming alive." He prepares a 37-page Bible-based brief known as "The Ezekiel Option," which postulates that supernatural powers will eliminate Israel's enemies. The number of exploding vehicles and dead bodies will have a "been there, done that" feel to readers of previous Rosenberg novels, but the story turns aggressively Christian, incorporating lengthy references to scriptural prophecy and the Antichrist, as well as conversion scenes. There's some heavy violence, including a beating, an elderly woman run over by a tank and a severed finger, but the book is better written and more complex than Left Behind, to which it will inevitably be compared. 4.0 out of 5 stars Not Reading This Is Not An Option, August 5, 2005
By John R. Linnell (New Gloucester, ME United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
How you view this book may well depend on how you view the world. If you are an active secularist you might as well save your money. If your politics are decidedly liberal, you will probably not like this book. However, you have an open mind on the issues of religion and Christianity or a religious bias in your life, this novel can be unsettling, scary and compelling. One thing Joel Rosenberg does not do in this book is fail to document his thesis and he also does not fail to spin another complicated and riveting story about the politics and dangers of the world we live in. There were portions of the story which I thought could have been handled better, especially the Erin McCoy - Jon Bennett saga near the end, however this book is not trash as some have suggested and does not deserve to be trashed. It deserves to be read as a thoughtful piece of writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is about the biblical end of time..., September 22, 2005
By Michael D. Trimble (Connecticut) - See all my reviews

Read the title of this review, if you aren't interested or don't believe biblical prophesy, then you probably won't find a lot that you like about this book. In fact this book will make you uncomfortable and your discomfort might even come out in your review as an emotional tirade (funny how that happens). So, rather than subject yourself to an uncomfortable reading experience just don't bother with the book. If on the other hand you are open to this type of thinking, this book will be enjoyable and will progress in ways that bring you comfort. Is it a great piece of literature? No, but it is interesting and suspenseful in a number of places. Does it take a leap of faith and are their places in this book that seem too incredible to believe? For some folks yes, but faith is what defines religion. I don't believe it is possible to predict the end of time, neither when or in what fashion, other than in general terms (the bible says fire). Like a thief in the night, that's what I have always been told. This book makes you think and I believe Rosenberg accomplished exactly what he had hoped when he wrote it.

Recommended to all fair minded people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Thriiler, August 24, 2006
By Gary Turner (Powder Springs, Georgia USA) - See all my reviews

Joel C. Rosenberg has written an outstanding novel. Taken from today's headlines, the Middle East is unsettled due to new oil discoveries in Israel. Jon Bennett, Presidential advisor is directly impacted by a government overthrow in Russia. He consults his mentor, former Mossad agent Eliezer Mordechai. Dr. Mordechai exposes Jon to the prophecy from Ezekiel 38-39, which tells of an uprising of Middle Eastern nations along with Russia. These nations intend to attack Israel. This is so familiar that it is uncanny.
