EzyDog Checkmate Martingale-Style Dog Collar

Limited slip training collar

A reliable and secure adjustable dog collar, EzyDog Checkmate Collars are humanely designed not to choke your pup during dog training exercises or at your local excitement-filled dog park. The Martingale-style Checkmate correction collar also has a lower profile fit, making it suitable as an everyday collar.

The Martingale style of dog collar provides more control over your dog without the choking effect of a slip collar. These collars are extensively used in training and also help keep your dog's head from slipping out of the collar during walks or when the dog gets overly excited.

A Martingale collar is made with two loops. The larger loop is slipped onto the dog’s neck and a leash is then clipped to the smaller loop. When the dog tries to pull, the tension on the leash pulls the small loop taut, which makes the large loop smaller and tighter on the neck, thus helping to prevent escape. When the collar is properly fitted, it will be comfortably loose without your dog noticing it much until he or she begins to pull.

  • Does not require resizing for each fitting
  • Correction collar provides just enough “check” when necessary
  • Humane and safe with proper use
  • Super strong buckle closure makes slipping over the head obsolete
  • Sizing options: Small (1/2-inch width, 10- to 13-inch necks); Medium (3/4-inch width, 13- to 18-inch necks); Large (1-inch width, 17- to 26-inch necks); Extra-Large (1-1/2-inch width, 22- to 33-inch necks)

Customer Reviews

The material is very good quality.
Even gives you a separate plastic ring to attach all dog ID and Rabies tags.

She is pretty good at loose leash walking but will pull when excited.

I originally bought the medium size collar for my approx 60lb pitmix. It was too tight to work right. Amazon was super helpful in arranging the return and also waived the shipping cost for the larger size, since my initial purchase had included other items which qualified me for free-ship. Ok back to the collar. I have been looking for a collar that would allow me to "remind" my dog not to pull when walking. She is pretty good at loose leash walking but will pull when excited. Since she is working on her Good Canine Citizen and Therapy certifications a choke type collar was not an option as they are not allowed. This collar allows a little tightening .. enough to get the dogs attention without hurting it. I chose blaze orange because we frequent a nearby state park that allows hunting. I asked her trainer if it was ok to leave it on her while crated. She adjusted it so that when it is tightened it is no tighter than her original collar (2 fingers worth of room) and said that it was safe so long as it was not adjusted to be tighter. My dog loves the collar because when she is not tugging it is much looser than her last collar. I like it because, first of all it appears to work for her. She will tug a little but after I correct her once or twice she realizes that it is not good to tug and settles down, secondly I like the construction of the collar it appears to be pretty heavy duty and has a nice specific place to put tags so there won't be in any mistakes (putting the leash on the tag ring and risking her getting loose). I also like that it is very visible, I can see her in our backyard with just the light of the moon or our very dim porch light. I was originally concerned that her big ole'pittie neck wouldn't even feel the correction but that doesn't seem to be a problem.Read more ›

This is a very nice collar and I like the idea of the snap instead of just putting it over my dogs head like all other martingale collars. The one and only issue I have is when it tightens the metal clasp turns sideways and kinks causing it not to release without intervention. My dog pulls and it goes from loose to tight and the only way to make it loose again it by playing with it. It is actually very difficult sometimes. If this can be fixed it would be the best martingale collar out there.

First the positives - this is a high quality well made product. However, the design is strange. Please note that this collar is described as "Martingale-Style" collar - it is not a martingale collar. I use martingale collars for my Olde English Bulldogges because their necks are almost as big as their heads and a normal collar will easily slip over their heads once they learn to back out of them.

First design oddity - the metal ring that you use to hook up the leash is very heavy in relation to everything else on the collar - so it tends to hang down under the dogs neck. You'll find that the clip for the dog's tags is on the opposite side of the collar which causes the dog's tags to sit high on their neck behind their ears. I've never seen a collar that wears like this.

Second design oddity - This collar is either left handed or right handed depending on how you put the collar on the dog. This means that the collar tightens differently depending on which side of you the dog is walking. This, like the first design problem, is more annoying than a true design problem but the strange design has one more problem that I consider serious.

Third design issue - The collar once tightened, does not always loosen readily. When I'm walking the dog on a leash I can loosen it quite easily. But when the collar snags on weeds or sticks when the dog is running in the pasture it can tighten up and stay that way. This also leaves 2-3" of the collar sticking out which increases the risk of snagging on something making this a little scary for me to leave on my dogs as an everyday collar.

My recommendation is that if you want a martingale collar, skip this product and get the real thing.

I tried all kinds of collars for my 5 month old pup and the Checkmate Martingale wins hands down. I used a harness from 10 weeks to about 4.f months. Then we had to graduate to a collar - I tried a nylon choke collar, slip lead, a chain choke collar and a regular martingale collar.

First, ALL of these items have to be placed over the pup's head, which is a pain in the butt - both to put on and take off. Further, a young pup will tend to freak out with any collar on let alone a choke collar. For me, chokes are too harsh for a young dog as they tend to back away and pull harder (choking themselves all the while). I then moved to a slip lead. The lead was easy enough to slip over the pup's head, but always needed to be adjusted to take up slack after it was put on, as well as to allow slack remove it. And since a slip lead is simply a choke collar and lead in one - I was back to a frantic chocking pup. So a martingale seemed like the best choice - the pup will get a slight squeeze without being choked silly.

I initially tried a plain old nylon martingale collar with a chain check. It worked fine, but as already mentioned - I had to slip on and off the pup's head. This was a constant battle because when adjusted properly the collar is a little tight going over the head. Just not fun for me or the pup. This is were the EzyDog Checkmate beats the others -it's a martingale collar with a clip buckle. So you adjust the collar to fit properly and there is no slipping the collar over the pup's head - just put it on like a regular collar using the buckle. Easy peasy! It works wonderful and I have a well behaved pup on a leash. I'd buy it all over again.
