This review is from: Félix Mendelssohn: Intégrale des quatuors à cordes - Quatour Talich (Audio CD)
The Mendelssohn string quartets have been an unjustly neglected part of the repertoire. Coming after Beethoven's immortal legacy and before the great output of XX Century work by Bartok, Schoenberg and Shostakovich, the Mendelssohn cycle seems at first to lack innovation and expressiveness. However, a closer listening yields immense rewards. These quartets are deeply moving and, like great Romantic works, talk directly to the senses and not to the brain. Allow yourself to be immersed in a world of sheer beauty and very personal expression. Leave your prejudices about Romantism in a safe box and indulge in the pleasures of the highest level. This is especially true with the wonderful interpretations of the Talich quartet. Coming from very good recordings of Beethoven, they find in the Romantic

repertoire the right repertoire. These are expressive readings, with lots of accents and yet these are clear readings where Mendelssohn's conception is not clouded by unecessary displays of virtuosity. No string quartet aficionado will regret his investment in this excellent collection.
