2.0 out of 5 stars The biggest F-14 you can buy, other than that, not much of anything., December 12, 2010

Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: F-14 Tomcat model aircraft 1:18 scale (Toy)
... is this the biggest F-14 model that i ever found?
YES, my first one was a 1:24 model, which, unfortunately, most model companies are NOT making anymore, the biggest they make are now 1:32 scale.

... does it have the awe factor?
definitely, for any friend who are into airplanes, they'll definitely make this a talking point when they come visit you.

... was it cheap and value for money?
CHEAP? NO!, $300, heck no, but it all depends on how you look at it, most 1:32 model F-14's are in the 150-200 mark, this one is 4 times bigger. twice as long and twice the width of the 1:32.
plus it came semi- pre assembled with paint works.

... do i love it / did i keep it?
YES and YES.

NOW, they BAD Stuff.

Sure, it's the biggest, but, there's a LOT of bad stuff with it too.

for starters, for a 1:18 scale, i expect more detail.
also, some details are wrong, like the swipe wing, it goes way pass the real F-14 designs.
the canopy glass it not perfect in shape and it has faint line marks out of the box.

the landing gear would have been better IF they provided us with two FIXED options, open or closed, rather than this ridiculous toy like approach of being able to put the entire landing gear assembly to the wheel house. its a nice idea but it doesnt work, first, this is not a toy, second, by doing so, they make the landing gear somewhat smaller in order to make it fit and lastly, it wabbles. besides, nobody wants a model plane this big without showing the details of the landing gear.

The Armaments are NOT switchable, so, you are stock with whatever the configuration it, although, you can take it off but you cant put the armament into a different configuration, just like the real F-14, i've seen 1:32 F-14 with far better configuration options than this big boy.

paint is not for modeling, the paint they use is like ordinary toys, well, its made in China to say the least, but at least you are now forewarned.
paint workmanship is like from a novice modeler with some paints painted unevenly and worst, some sprays overflows. and did i mention, they use ordinary paint? :-))

the markings on the F-14 are wrong, if you assembled a lots of F-14 models, you will spot them right away.

IF you based your decision to buy based on the Amazon photos, you will be in for a very nasty surprise, the F-14 arrived with "Panther Spots", for the past 23 yrs, I've never seen a panther paint works on an F-14; terrible, i was very much close to returning it within 30 minutes of opening the box.

BUT, you paid $40 to ship it and if you return it, you will spend another $40-50, so...

I decided to keep it

here's why
its the biggest F-14 i own (70%)
for its scale, its still cheaper, relatively speaking, compared to 1:32 versions and plus, i dont have to spend weeks assembling it (20%)
I dont want to spend money to return it (10%)

Are there better F-14 models out there in terms of details and accuracy, Definitely.

IF you WANT the BIGGEST and dont want to spend lots of hours assembling one, YES, this one's for you.
Also, if you're like me who just wants another F-14 to add to its collection, this one's for you too :-))
