This wasn't the sim you played in High School,
This review is from: F-15 (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
Ahh, remember 1987, Reagan's second term, your first PC, Iraqui's were our friends, the Russians were not. Remember your first flight simulator games? It was probably Microporse's Strike Eagle, or Falcon by Spectrum Holobyte, or Sublogic Jet. Even the games that made these earlier ones obsolete have long ago been consigned to the dust heap of obsolescence. "Janes F-15" shows shy you'll never be able to fly your old legacy sims again. Though called "F-15", this game is actually dedicated to the F-15E made famous in desert storm. Unlike most F-15's which were designed primarily to fight other airplanes, and only secondarily strike ground targets, the F-15E was designed with strike in mind. It's heavier and less manueverable than other F-15's, and its weaponry and avionics were designed to isolate and identify ground targets like tanks and Scud missile launchers. So complicated are its missions, that the F-15E requires a crew of 2, the pilot and the weapons officer in the back. Managing the complex systems while dodging threats at 500 MPH is no small feat for even a well-trained crew of 2. While only a True Brother can say for certain how well Janes got the F-15E, it's so complicated that they can't be that far off the mark, with that airplane's complex systems intricately modeled. A point-and-click interface allows the player to scout around the plane's complex panel and flip switches ala iF-22, but you'll still have to navigate one Jane's trademarked manuals - an overstuffed reservoir of information that will still remain fresh when software makers release a game that makes F-15 look about as old as "Chuck Yeager's Air Combat". As one can expect, the learning curve is pretty murderous, with almost overwhelming threats, clouds of missiles and swarms of MiG fighters ready to open up a keg of whoopass. As a sim, "F-15" is truly king of its sky. On my P200 with a 12mb VoodooII board and 64mb of RAM, the graphics were acceptably smooth. Be aware though - unlike other Jane's sims (ATF, USNF or ATF) that were content to offer cartoon sims of major warplanes, "F-15" has the makings of a pretty intense and uncompromising simulation, even without the combat. Make hard and banking turns without compensating with added thrust, and the jet will drop altitude like a brick. Rolling the airplane at the low end of the energy curve will cause your wonder-jet to skid like a bald-tires on ice. This isn't 1992, when simulated jets merely stall - this baby will positively depart controlled flight if you don't treat her right. The game offers single missions, quick action, training and a campaign as well as an extensive on-line resource all built around a compelling sim. One criticism - if the plane is such a challenge to just fly (let alone fight) then makers of such realistic titles should make more of flight training, with cadets having to prove they've got more right to fly the vaunted jet in virtual skies than 39.95 will allow. If you've got something less than a Celeron processor, get this title.

Reliable and fun game for flight sim/battle fans,
By Jerry A. Gehring (Clinton, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: F-15 (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
This little game is great for beginners who want to learn to fly one of the greatest USAF fighter two seaters since the Vietnam era F-4 phantom jet. Unfortunately, there was no book included when I purchased this game a year ago in 2000. That is what I came looking for today (the book) when I decided to write this review in conflict with a person who said in his review that the plane was too hard to fly. It's a cinch. My 11 year old can blow the enemy away and this is the only flight sim he plays.

GREAT!!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: F-15 (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
This game is great. I myself have shot down over 100 planes using the AMRAAMS,sparrows, sidewinders and even a few by gun. I'm giving it a four because the radar is hard to use and when you use sidewinders you hear this warbling sound even if it is not locked on. For example I chased this mig 23 for 15 minutes and all I heard was eeeeeeeerrrrrrreeeeeerrrrrr. It is very annoying. But otherwise this a great game.
