5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT READING FOR ANYONE WHO LOVES THE F-86, June 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: F-86 Sabre (Warbird History) (Paperback)
Bob Dorr`s brilliant history of the famous North American F-86 Sabre jet fighter is a must for all admirers of this great airplane, whether you belong to the exclusive fraternity of pilots who had the privilege to fly this aircraft, or whether, like myself, you grew up in the era of the Korean War, idolizing the American aces who soundly defeated the communist MiG-15 threat, high in the skies over eastern Asia. Robert Dorr must have one or the most extensive collections of military aircraft anywhere! The photographs in this book are extraordinary. 9823 aircraft in the Sabre series were manufactured, making the Sabre the most numerous jet fighter outside the Soviet Union. The book gives impressive detail to the Navy`s FJ Fury series, as well as a never before published full expositon of foreign countries that operated Sabres. Having as a hobby, giving programs to various clubs and history classes on the air war over Korea, "F-86 Sabre" is one of my favorite references. The Korean War chapters are fascinating, and the chapter on Pilot Talk (Chapter 5) is extremely absorbing. Hollywood script writers could not come up with stories that compare with the events that these guys actually lived through! Dorr gives much deserved credit to the under-appreciated Col. Harrison R. Thyng, head of the 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing, and one of the great leaders in U.S.A.F history. Thyng risked his career to save the lives of his men, when facing overwhelming odds numerically against the enemy MiG-15`s. If the F-86 Sabre holds sentimental value to you, then this is your book!
