3.0 out of 5 stars No-frills gangsta rap
Flint's Dayton Family developed a Midwest following during the mid-90s, despite never quite breaking through to the mainstream. Their successful independent debut What's on My Mind? led to a major label contract and the follow-up, 1996's "FBI." "FBI" is a ride through one of the worst ghettos of America, and Dayton Family's imagery and narratives can be powerful and...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Midwest's hardest and realest group stays real with this!, September 20, 2005
This review is from: F.B.I. (Audio CD)
An year after "What's On My Mind" was released and went gold without any video-play, came out F.B.I. However, the group encountered quite a few problems with the law (problems that continued in years to come) - Baccstabber was gone to prison, and Bootleg's verses were recorded in 2 weeks, since he was going to the big-house as well!... However it doesn't show on the album: the album is strong and perfect as ever, and Bootleg's verses are as tight as they always were!... Nothing really changed about The Dayton Familly - they're still the realest and hardest rappers in the Midwest. On this album (and the others as well) they're still rapping agressively over hard hitting, clean and powerful beats. There's nothing at all subtle about the Dayton Family. They tell it like it is, and if it's shocking to you... well, go pick Nelly/50 Cent's CD. When you hear the Dayton Familly you get to hear their no-way-out mentality with a feel of desperation which is just a part of life. The Dayton boys aren't cocky, they don't floss, they're just troubled guys with a lot on their mind. Nothing is taboo for Bootleg and Shoestring - not murder, not cocaine, not a#@ wooping, not smacking bi#$%s, seemingly nothing. It's so nice to see rappers so unhinged and unconcerned with pop crossover. They are REAL with a capital R. These guys aren't just another hardcore group, there's something unique about them. They not only talk the talk, but they also walk the walk. The were able to overcome so much trouble in their lives and come out with those amazing albums. F.B.I. is a classic without a doubt, although I think I feel their debut a bit better, since the hooks were a bit more catchy (I don't really feel the singing on most of the songs on F.B.I.). Anyway, Bootleg and Shoestring deliver their hardest verses (you gotta hear their voices to understand what hardcore is all about) over Steve Pitts' remerkable beats. You gotta understand - that group that blew up in the 90's was the 1st to bring attention to the Midwest rap scene, way before Eminem ever thought about rapping. Those guys deserve respect - a LOT of it. See, years before there was 8 Mile, there was Dayton Avenue.

5.0 out of 5 stars F.B.I. is one of the greatest gangsta rap cd's ever recorded, July 2, 1999
This review is from: F.B.I. (Audio CD)
The Dayton Family know what they're doen, and they do it true. They got the phattest beats to go with the phattest lyrics. They get straight to it with 79th & Halstead, not wasting any time. This is the truest cd I've ever heard, besides what 2Pac recorded. I give them 5 stars+, 5 thumbs up, 5 up's in every good possible way.

I really didn't know too much about The Dayton Family, I heard them on a few songs and liked them and saw this album had many good reviews so I checked it out, and needless to say I will be getting some of their other albums. Bootleg & Shoestring, with some rapping by Ghetto E and Baccstabber (who was in prison) hold down the album very nicely and deliver real street hardcore rap, not that watered down radio/video BS that's all over nowadays. With 13 songs, 3 are almost classics, 4 are ok, the other 6 are tight songs. Guests rap on 1 song and do the hook on about half of them, Steve Pitts nicely produces the whole album, with some Co-Production from the Dayton Family. A must have album for fans of real rap.

#1 - 9.5 (short but tight intro by Bootleg)
#2 - 8.5 (f/ Night & Day)
#3 - 7.5 (f/ Lorie Coleman)
#4 - 9.5 (tight beat)
#5 - 6 (dirty song -- f/ Esham & Night & day -- my least favorite on here)
#6 - 7.5
#7 - 7.5 (f/ Night & Day)
#8 - 9.5 (tight beat)

#10 - 9

5.0 out of 5 stars On Str8 Hit!!, April 10, 2005

This review is from: F.B.I. (Audio CD)
Dayton Family's 2nd album "F.B.I. is nothing short of being a gangsta classic. They are from Flint, Michigan, and are not very well known, unfortunately. They mesh various styles of rap, often on the same track. They flow somewhat like a mix of Midwest and East Coast rappers over a medley of Midwest beats (fast beats, similar to Bone Thugs at times) and West Coast G-Funk. The song "Hand That Rocks The Cradle" is an example. It has a complex lyrical content with a mobbish Midwest foreground beat paired with a West Coast classic background beat: a whistly, whiny keyboard synth. They consistently use this method of meshing styles throughout the album, and that makes this one refreshing. They are very hard core, and are very clever lyrically.

Im a huge Three Six Mafia fan and I never heard of The Dayton Family until they were featured on a track with 3-6. My friend went out and looked and found FBI. I didnt even think they had their own CD's. I thought it was just some guy hanging around the studio that got lucky and got on a track. When I heard FBI I was in shock. What tight production and some Realy hardcore lyrics. How could I have not heard of them? Well now that I know who they are I let everyone else know too. Hopefully theyll stay out of jail long enough to do another CD

I haven't heard all of Dayton Family's stuff, but I have heard this album, and it is better than most of their other stuff. 79th & Halstead is tight, Hand That Rocks the Cradle is tight, F.B.I. is tight, man this whole cd is bumpin.

Cop this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the top 10 gangsta rap albums of all times, July 1, 2003
By
"pizzlemanizzle" (Pittsburgh, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: F.B.I. (Audio CD)
The majority of gangsta rappers have little to no lyrical ability and only get put on because of their content. Dayton Family is the complete opposite of that. Shoestring has one of the most distinctive voices in the rap game and his lyrics never fail to deliver. Bootleg's verses on here are amazing even though they were recorded in under 2 weeks (he was forced to do so because he was going back to prison and had only 2 weeks to finish his verses). Underground heads and mainstream fans alike have been playing this album for years and it doesn't get old. Best tracks
-79th & Halstead (Good beat, amusing rhyme patterns)
-Hand That Rocks The Cradle (All around good song not much to say)
-Real With This (One of my favorite Dayton songs. Shoe's verse is the best on the album)
-What's On My Mind Part 2 (Continuation from the last album. Much better than the original. Commentary that actually has meaning. One of my favorite hooks ever)
-Killer G's (Good song, hard beat, great verses by Shoe & Bootleg)
-Blood Bath (The first Dayton song I ever heard. Kinda wish the intro to this could have been the beat)
If you're a fan of gangsta rap or rap in general and don't have this album-shame on you. Pick it up and stop being ridiculed.

I'm getting older and outgrowing gangsta rap and it's cliches, but The Dayton Family always manage to transcend these cliches. This album is full of murder, dope-dealing, and other g-rap staples, but the MC's have so much skill you don't care. Having Esham on your album always makes it better.
