F.E.A.R. 3 is a First-Person Shooter (FPS) that blends classic single and multiplayer combat with the unforgettable Horror/Survival gameplay that the F.E.A.R. franchise is known for. The third game in the F.E.A.R. series, F.E.A.R. 3 continues the intricate storyline tying together the psychically dangerous mother Alma Wade with her two sons "Point Man" and Paxton Fettel, as well as the F.E.A.R. operations team. Players take control of both "Point Man" and Paxton Fettel at different times in the game, utilizing each's unique abilities and powers in a dark adventure that will test the player's loyalties, combat skills and sense of duty. Additional features include: co-op and multiplayer modes, cinematics and story input by John Carpenter and Steve Niles, and additional downloadable content (DLC) available online.

Story

Nine months ago, Point Man and his F.E.A.R. squad were tapped to stop a telepathically gifted cannibal who had begun a murderous rampage. Point Man learned the target was his brother, Paxton Fettel, working alongside their tortured and psychically powerful mother, Alma Wade. Despite this revelation, Point Man followed orders to destroy them and subsequently ravaged the surrounding city and most of his F.E.A.R. team. Now, it is clear that Alma's psychic influence survived - and worse, she is about to birth something that could destroy the world. Fettel has returned from death with an unclear agenda, refusing to leave Point Man's side and asking for help to reach Alma. The remaining F.E.A.R. Squad is still trying to complete their mission. With his chain of command broken and Point Man calling his own shots, where will his allegiance lie.

Gameplay

As with the previous two releases in the F.E.A.R. Franchise, F.E.A.R. 3 is a FPS with Horror gameplay. Players experience action both from perspective of Paxton Fettel - resurrected from the headshot he received in the previous game - and his brother Point Man, who was the trigger man. Since Fettel was indeed killed in the earlier encounter, his presence in the game is almost ghostlike, with he relying on a devastating range of telekinetic powers, including the ability to possess the bodies of the living in order to perform certain physical tasks. Point Man on the other hand is quite corporal and is a super soldier with expertise in a wide range of weaponry. He also has loyalties to the A.I. F.E.A.R. operatives that populate the game. The problem with this is that the operative's goal is to eliminate the growing power of Alma, the mother of both Point Man and Paxton Fettel. Because of this layers will face choices that will pit duty against family loyalties. Both characters have access to mech units encountered throughout the game.

F.E.A.R. 3 also features an impressive range of multiplayer options. The first of these is a co-op mode that allows one player to take on the powers of Fettel, while the other assumes those of Point Man as they work together during an uneasy truce. An additional multiplayer mode is available that tests your ability to work together under stress and constant fire to get your squad from point A to point B as a unit.

Key Game Features

  • Divergent Co-op - Deep, social gameplay that gives players distinctly different abilities
  • Experience the Almaverse - New sinister enemy creatures birthed in Alma's warped mind spill into reality
  • Generative Scare - Increases the feeling of isolation and unpredictability by offering new experiences each time
  • Masters of Horror - Legendary director John Carpenter and writer Steve Niles provide their expertise on cinematics and story
  • Multiplayer - A twist on classic multiplayer modes set inside the Almaverse provide an experience unique to F.E.A.R. 3.

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is solid gold as far as I am concerned. In co-op it is so fun and team work is a must. There thrill, gore, and fun at every turn you make. Very dark game with loads of action. Playing as the ghost was the most fun I have had with any video game in a long time taking over bodies and frying the enemies. Games story line is dark and unique aswell which adds to its appeal. Definitely not for kids though...

4.0 out of 5 stars High replay value... July 29, 2011

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Why I think is a great game:
-About 8 hours for the main campaign to unlock other character to play the story again with other gameplay, powers and alternative ending, 16 hours total.
-The whole game is a coop experience, campaign and multiplayer modes
-Character level progress, campaign and multiplayer modes works together to reach your goals and be stronger
-About 50 different Combat Challenges to accomplish
-Multiplayer modes are unique and fast action to enjoy with friends, you can play alone too fighting "bots".

Above all you will find a creepy mood, great graphics and action. For me is awesome game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome entry in a great video game series January 21, 2012

This is a very good game. Great survival horror action game. I enjoyed playing it. So why did I give it four stars? Don't get me wrong, I highly recommend this, but I think you'd best try Fear 2 first. First off to get the story of course, and two is that this game is almost the same as Fear 2 except for the characters and storyline. Same graphics, controls, ect. If you enjoyed Fear 2, pick this up immediatly, you will not regret it. If you didn't like Fear 2, there's not much here for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not sure what people are talking about... July 4, 2011

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Title says it. While the first two F.E.A.R. games were more focused on scaring the player, while F.3.A.R. is more focused on action, which a lot of people are dissapointed with. I say take this game for what it is, and it is FUN. Let me just clarify that I won't be really talking about the story, but more about the gameplay. The first cutscene is very stylized and neat looking, which is odd, compared to the extremely generic menu. But cool nonetheless. You get to play as Point Man the first time through a level, but you are then able to select his brother, Paxton Fettel, after you beat that mission. Point Man is your standard shooter grunt, but with the ability to move super fast (portrayed in the game as Slo-mo) and perform both slide and jump kicks. Paxton, while making the game slightly more difficult, is an absolute blast to play as. He can throw plasma bolts, suspend people and items (but not move them, which makes throwing things around corners a pain), throw things, (specific items only, which is weird.) and posses people. While in co-op, P1 is Point Man, and P2 is Paxton. Always. You cannot switch, which is slightly annoying. The brothers compliment each others abilities in a way few games have ever done. The co-op is absolutely fantastic. Now: the scare factor. Yes, it was toned down. Yes, Alma does not appear quite as often, and yes, the game sometimes takes place in broad daylight. I don't know if other people know this, but the scare system in 3 is RANDOM. Alma appearances are RANDOM. I ran into her maybe 5 times in the first mission alone. Other people might not see her at all. However, the game is always creepy. Not edge-of-your-seat scary, just...Creepy. As for the weapons... It's kind of a mixed bag. Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars Very different and very fun! June 26, 2011

Graphics/Design:
The graphics in F.3.A.R are not spectacular, but they get the job done. The level designs are linear for the most part and player's won't have much trouble navigating the levels and finding where to go. Though the levels are linear, each level has it's own distinct look to it, so environments are not repeated which is pleasing to the eye.

Campaign:
When playing solo, the game will operate as a normal shooter since you will playing as Pointman. However, the game shines when it comes to the co-op mode. In co-op the game allows the second player to be Paxton Fettel, he plays very differently from the Pointman, using his psychic abilities and mind control techniques against his enemies. He brings in a more dynamic strategy to the combat, he can restrain enemies in the air allowing the Pointman to get an easy shot, he can take control of soldiers allowing him access to their artillery providing fire support for Pointman, and finally he has the ability to give Pointman a shield barrier that makes him more damage resistant in combat. In other words, Paxton is the perfect wingman in combat, his abilities allow for many combat options for the player, whether they want to assist the Pointman from afar with the shielding and levitation powers or possessing a soldier and fighting alongside the Pointman on the frontlines. Whatever character the player chooses to be, the campaign is very fun with two people. The story is hazey at first, but begins to clear up the further you get. The campaign is filled with intense firefights and awesome cut scenes that will leave you saying, "Holy $#&%!" The downside is that the campaign is very short, it will not take you very long at all to beat it.
