4.0 out of 5 stars What can I say? I love that friggin Nail Gun...
As a huge fan of the original FEAR, Extraction Point didn't need too many bells & whistles to get my attention. I loved the atmosphere, the visuals, sound, AI, guns... All very satisfying. The story was decent for a video game, but I read a book or movie when I want a good story. Games don't usually deliver for me in that category.

Where to start, I was expecting much from the addon to the great game FEAR. Instead you get little. They reused much of the same textures, dark area's, and characters from the original.

No new characters to speak off,non exsistent story line even weaker than the first. You will have a hard time finding much new here.

The game is far too short, you can finish in about 3-5 hours, and its too easy, even on the hardest setting.Ohh and to top it off it adds nothing to multiplayer at all, no new levels, characters or weapons, not even a new mode.

If you never bought the original, you can have the multiplayer for free! Truly there is no reason to pick this up at all. The game is still fun in the way the first game was fun, but feels less like an expansion and more like the last few levels they left out of the game :(.

Not worth 30 dollars in anyway shape or form. Best to wait and buy in the bargin bin for 10 dollars or less. In other words don't support developers who put this kind of "stuff" out at almost full game price, its a rippoff at best.

We need to Show big companies Like EA, Activision, and Vivendi that its not alright to rip us off, the only thing they understand is not buying their products. I finished this the first night I bought it in 3.5 hours of none too exciting gameplay. Then you can uninstall and use as a coaster, an expensive coaster.

Extraction Point, like most have said, is more of what you liked about the original. The developers weren't very daring. They really didn't add much to the story, and they left the gameplay formula alone. 2 or 3 new types of bad guys- cool. Some new locales... sweet. The 2 new guns were very nice, but as someone else said, the ammo is scarce, which is a shame. It would have been a lot of fun to go on a total rampage with both of those guns for a decent stretch of time. For instance... one of my favorite game-moments was near the end of Half-life 2, when you have nothing except the super-charged gravity gun, and you are just going absolutely berserk with it. FEAR needs moments like that.

This expansion was brief, which some have complained about. It took me like 5 or 6 hours on medium, and that fit the bill nicely. Admittedly, I may have a shorter attention span then some, but I was satisfied.

Another thing that some have complained about is the system requirements. FEAR looked gorgeous and played very smoothly on my puter. Here, they ramped up output, and I had a pretty tough time tweaking it. This actually frustrated me until I checked online, and discovered that it wasn't just me. It picked a level of settings for me, and it looked real nice, but when a little action hit the screen, the game stuttered horribly. I had to sacrifice quite a bit of eye candy, to be able to make this game play well. Expansions don't usually challenge your system that much more than the original game.

Anyway... I am a big fan of that nail gun, and I was pleased to wield it once more. This game should have probably been priced a little cheaper for what they give you, but at least you can resell it!

This review is from: F.E.A.R. Extraction Point (CD-ROM)
Extreme disappointment is a good way to describe my view of Extraction Point. Now I'm a HUGE fan of the first game, one of the first truely creepy games since the System Shock series. Don't get me wrong I was not expecting vastly improved gameplay, all new enemies, or a new physics engine. What I expected is STORY, a good story can make a good game great! The story of Extraction Point has a chopped off feeling akin to watching the first segment of your favorate TV show and then your wife shuts off the TV. If the game would have been $19.99 and been named "F.E.A.R. Extraction Point: Episode One", that would have been ok. As is, this is like expecting a T-Bone steak for dinner and getting peanut butter sandwich. No I'm not hungry, but boy I'm not satisfied either. To give an real comparison of how short the gameplay is, it took me ~35 min to buy the game (long line at Fry's), 2.5 hours to get home (L.A. traffic), less than 30 min to load (had to reload F.E.A.R. first), and a little more than 3 hours to play. It took longer to get than to play.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly over-priced but it does deliver more FEAR, October 31, 2006

Compared to the FEAR itself, this expansion pack will be some what disappointing. Overall, I thought it is a worthy product. It should be about $25 or even $20...not $30.

PROS -
A few new weapons.
A few new bad guy characters to fight.
In some ways, scarier than the first.
Same FEAR style, feel and game play.
Nice amount of play time, 6-10 hours, depending on your style.

CONS -
The new weapons are a nice additions, yet they lack a certain PUNCH!!! The turrets were cool, but wimpy. They should have made the turrets really awesome and just provided fewer of them throughout the game to keep things balanced.

I thought this could have been scarier than the first FEAR, except many of the scary moments either happen to fast or you miss them because you are facing the wrong way. I had to keep quick saving so I could replay the game if I missed a scary moment.

SUMMARY -
In the end, I really liked this add-on to FEAR. It does have its rough edges and is lacking in some ways. The ALMA story continues, just not in the way you think...which is cool. It took me over 10 hours to finish. When I play FEAR, I go slow and enjoy every fiber of the game. Yes, you could blow through this in 4-6 hours, but you will miss out on the visceral experience the developers are trying to give you. Save the "RUN AND GUN" style for games like Unreal Tournament. FEAR should be thoroughly absorbed and digested...piece by piece. Considering the lack of good 1st person shooters out there currently and the lame attempt by VALVE called EPISODE ONE..a crappy, dull, feeble add-on for Half Life 2...you will be glad EXTRACTION POINT has become available!

This review is from: F.E.A.R. Extraction Point (CD-ROM)
F.E.A.R. Extraction Point continues to provide about another 6 hours of good solid F.E.A.R.-style gameplay. However, I found the added weapons to be near useless and played most of the game through with my standard combo of shotgun, assault rifle and 1 special (usually plasma rifle or HV penetrator). Plasma rounds were particularly hard to come by. (That's ok, it's a really powerful gun) The chaingun was sort of fun but not as much as I had hoped, and the laser carbine was just sort of silly. Turrets weren't as much fun as I had hoped, but they do make the final fight cake.

The Alma story was continued but not really to the end that I thought. (or I just didn't get it, that's possible too) A large portion of the creep-sequences were not as well scripted as in the original. I missed the visuals on a good number of them b/c I was either not looking the right way, or far more often, b/c I had hit the trigger pt. but since I wasn't charging into rooms blindly, didn't get to see the visual. This was disappointing, since it was a good chunk of what made the original so good. Didn't think much of the ending.

Music was too loud (trying to be dramatic) when launching several 'staged' fights. Which is a pain when you're trying to hear which way the bad guys are going so you can do what you got the game for. You know, shoot them.

Overall: If you liked F.E.A.R., like the smart AI but wanted different weapons or some different buildings to play in this may be for you. Otherwise replay the original or go buy something else. I just replayed the original for the third time right before this came out and I enjoyed it quite a bit more than this expansion. I don't think TimeGate quite 'got' exactly the mix that made the original as good as it was.

The good news is I liked the game so much that I have played it through twice. The bad news is that I've had the game for a week. Left me wishing for more. I loved the first, I've played it through several times, and Extraction Point gives you a little more. Cool new weapons, a new enemy, and a twist on Alma's relationship with the hero. This game sets-up a true sequel, and adds more size and scope to the setting of the first. From the complaints, I guess people thought this would be a sequel. The graphics are basically the same as the first, and so is the game play. You realize that what you did in the first just made things worse, and that you have opened Pandora's Box. True, $30 is a bit much. $20 would have made the pill easier to swollow. You get a few new levels, the last of which will keep you jumping. Buy if you are a fan of the first, but remember that this is just an expansion pack.

3.0 out of 5 stars F.E.A.R. Extraction Point = F.P.S. expansion pack that should have been part of the original release, December 19, 2011

This review is from: F.E.A.R. Extraction Point (CD-ROM)
F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) Extraction Point is a first-person shooter with a psychological horror spin. Developed by TimeGate studios and released in 2006, F.E.A.R.'s story revolves around a Special Forces team who investigates and contains paranormal phenomena. You play as a new but nameless member of the F.E.A.R. team called in to eliminate a cannibalistic killer named Paxton Fettel who controls an army of cloned supersoldiers. After Fettel seizes control of a technology corporation building and murders all inside it's up to the F.E.A.R. team to capture or eliminate him by any means necessary. F.E.A.R. Extraction Point picks up immediately following the events of the original F.E.A.R.. Here are my thoughts on F.E.A.R. Extraction Point;

Pros

+ Excellent gunplay mechanics and guns are a lot of fun to shoot.

+ Clever and well done A.I.. Enemies flank, duck, cover, vault objects and work as a team to eliminate you.

+ Save anytime, anywhere.

+ Decent graphics

+ Bullet Time/Slow-Mo was extremely well done.

+ A bit more of a scare factor compared to the initial F.E.A.R..

+ Story wraps up some loose ends.

Cons <Contains SPOILERS>

- Lack of Widescreen support. You have to tinker with the .ini file if you want the same resolutions as the initial F.E.A.R..

- Extremely repetitive and bland environments. Endless trudging through sewers, office buildings, steam tunnels, construction sites, warehouses and labs.

- Still a rather limited number of enemy types.

- Convoluted story that's easily forgotten. All you need to remember is there's a p*ssed off paranormal girl and some genetically engineered soldiers trying to kill you.

- Not really scary at all. Scares are quickly diminished when you begin to receive communication interference, heralding something spooky is going to happen. Really cuts down the eerie tension factor of the game.

- Enemy banter and cursing become repetitive and annoying.

- Lackluster and uninspired score fails to add to the overall environment of the game.

- No real challenging boss fights, just a few tougher mobs from time to time.

- Checkpoint Saves black out and pause your screen for several seconds.

- Lone Wolf approach that your team directs is completely unnecessary. Often you're not even separated yet they tell you to go ahead on your own. Why?

- Bland ending.

In the end F.E.A.R. Extraction Point was slightly less disappointing than the original. Perhaps I was expecting more because of all the media this game received when it was released and the fact that F.E.A.R. 3 was recently released. I was especially let down in the little to no scares the game failed to produce. I've played plenty of Survival Horror type games and F.E.A.R. didn't deliver anything new. One of my other big gripes with the game is the continuous and repetitive environments which made the game go on and on. F.E.A.R. had a few fun moments and the gunfights were often fast and frantic but by the end I was glad the game was over.

Extreme disappointment way to describe my view of Extraction Point.

To spend 30.00 on this game not worth it.

This review is from: F.E.A.R. Extraction Point (CD-ROM)
F.E.A.R installs SecuROM (version 7.27) on your computer. This is spyware that is -supposed- to stop piracy. Getting it off your computer is a major pain as it creates registry keys with weird null characters in them, and files that can't be easily deleted. I will Google SecuROM and the name of any game I buy from now on to make sure the lame DRM SecuROM isn't on anything else I buy. If you already have this game just try and delete the
SecuROM directory on your computer and see what happens.
