This is one of the best shooters I've ever played, well, make that THREE of the best shooters I've ever played. Controls were responsive, overall it was quite "spooky," the only complaints I have were that at certain parts of each game there are "bottlenecks" that are frustratingly difficult to get past and result in destroying the fun of the game. The environments are also very similar for all three games, nothing really exotic and fairly repetitive. The storyline is definitely A+ though. I highly recommend this bundle!

After taking a long break from PC video games, I decided to try again, and found this title. The reviews seemed interesting, and since it contained the whole trilogy, I thought it would be worth the money. I must say that I was impressed with the graphics. I have since played Quake 4, and Fear's graphics were superior. (Vista, Duo Core, XFX 8600 GT 512mb, 2GB Ram). This game does get scary at times. Although you will most likely find a bit of a repetitive feel to it, it holds your attention. If you are into single player modes like I am, this will keep you busy for a while.

F.E.A.R. is a very fun game. The levels are a bit repetitive, but the great enemy AI makes up for that. Replay value is ok (there are things you miss the first time through; that and the different difficulty levels mean you might get maybe 2 or 3 replays out of it). Haven't tried multiplayer yet, but I like the fact that friends who don't have the full game can get the multiplayer component for free. I also haven't tried either expansion pack yet.
This includes the director's edition of F.E.A.R., which comes on a DVD (as opposed to several CDs) and includes some extra features.

I enjoyed this game quite a bit. So far I have only gotten through the Main game and I would think about halfway through Extraction Point. I haven't played non-stop either, but when I do play I play for about 2-4 hours straight.
I'm going to do a quick and dirty list type review below using: 1 poor, 2 Bad, 3 Average, 4 Good, 5 Excellent. Also bear in mind I am using Half-life 1 & 2 as a benchmark... if you haven't played those, you should! Story: Good The story is fun and entertaining, although I'm not entirely sure I'm grasping the mesh of story lines that the developers intended. First Person Shooter Spec-Ops marines meets the Supernatural ala The Ring? Plays fun enough however. Control: Excellent The controls are standard W,A,S,D with a few extras... Flashlight, Leaning, etc. Plays like it belongs on the computer, not like a tragic port from a console. (ex: Halo (which I enjoyed on the xbox!)) Graphics: Excellent I am rating the graphics as excellent based on the fact that some of the other FPS games currently on the market have phenominal over-the-top WOOHOO graphics, however no one has a machine capable of actually playing them! (ex: Crysis) Single player: Excellent So far this game has been extremely fun and the A.I. is incredibly smart at points. Some of the map design is obviously leaning in the A.I.'s favor, for example a lot of the rooms and buildings always have two ways around and the A.I. knows it when assaulting you, but that's okay they need the help as far as I'm concerned. :) If you are an experienced FPS player just start out on hard, moderate isn't worth your time and effort. Multiplayer: Unknown Sorry, I haven't tried... yet. I'm not really itching to try it either. There are games out there that are made for multiplayer (Team Fortress 2, Tribes, Battlefield). I prefer to have a few games where I don't have to rely on my internet connection to play. Hope this helps someone out there. The game has been out for 3 years, but I am happy I waited and scooped it all up in one fell swoop for $30! I gave the game 4 stars due to the odd story line, and there are better plots out there, even for FPS games... no, seriously, there is! LOL!

A Very spooky game. Not as fast paced like most shooters but it keeps you thinking. I highly recommend it.

F.E.A.R. Platinum Collection: The Complete Trilogy is a great set because it includes all of the F.E.A.R. games that are currently out including F.E.A.R., Extraction Point, and Perseus Mandate. I found the mix of scares and combat to be fairly level in nature and the entire game to be a fun experience. This is definitely the collection to get if you have ANY idea at all that you will want to play the expansions because it is a cheaper overall value and it works just as great.
Also, the online mode included with the game is also great. However, I quickly realized that in order to play it online, you really don't need to purchase this. So if you are looking just for online multiplayer, then spare this set and just look for F.E.A.R. Combat online because it is FREE for everyone!

I loved playing the game on my friend's computer, so when I saw FEAR along with it's two expansions, I had to get it.If you love the game, but held back initially, I would definately suggest getting this.

Well, of the scariest, most intensive and most immersive games I've played, this haves to be one of the games that it's on my top 3.
The last expansion, provides a good amount of action, a few 6 or 7 hours of play. It's not as scary as the first expansion, but is certainly gives you a few new enemies and a lot more suspense, even tho it doesn't gives a lot more info about the story line.

F.E.A.R. and its two sequels are fantastic games, even if they've gotten a bit dated as far as graphics are concerned. I've never been an eye-candy junkie and still enjoy playing older games as much as newer ones (and sometimes more!). This is a fantastic trilogy, maybe one of the best of the last decade. It's also a great way to spend your time as you await the release of F.E.A.R. II by brushing up just how frightening Alma can be... Playing the original game at night and alone can be very interesting.
The first F.E.A.R. game is easily the best of the three. The best 'horror' FPS I've ever played, it puts you in the shoes of the capable F.E.A.R. Point Man, complete with a wide variety of weapons that all just 'feel' right. Each weapon at your disposal is unique and has advantages/disadvantages that makes selecting the right weapon for the right situation critical to success, especially at the harder levels. The 2nd installment, Extraction Point, is the weakest of the three. Taking up the plot line exactly where it left off (with disappointing results, given the cliff-hanger ending of F.E.A.R.) it is filled with levels that are all very similar in layout. Much of the game is spent wandering subway tunnels, and without the same sort of intense unease caused by not knowing who/what Alma is nor what she is capable of, it misses a beat on the intensity scale. The 3rd installment, Perseus Mandate, is better than Extraction Point, with a much more intense combat element. Bigger guns, bigger enemies, and more carnage in general make this the most action intense of the three games. I enjoyed the new enemies and weapons, as well as uncovering more of the story. However, don't expect any huge surprises from Perseus Mandate; if you've been paying attention you'll see many of the 'reveals' from a long way off. There are a few issues with these games, including the failure to include native wide screen support in Extraction Point. There is a work around to this that involves modifying a game file (google it), but it seems silly that they never patched the game to support it, especially considering that the original F.E.A.R. game did! Re-releasing games as good as this trilogy without a support for monitor sizes that are now the norm is shortsighted at best and just plain stupid at worst. Another issue is compatibility with windows Vista. These games run just fine on Vista, but they do not auto-run from the CD, nor launch from the start menu. To get them each to play, I was forced to go into the game directory and find the actual .exe files associated with the game. This might be because I run Vista 64-bit, but that seems unlikely. I suggest just finding and downloading a NO CD hack as that *might* fix the problem, if you know what I mean. All together well worth the money. If you played F.E.A.R. but not the sequels this is a must buy.

Normally I don't write reviews on such things as computer games. Mostly, kids buy the games and are going to get it no matter what I say. This game is the exception.
The graphics are a little dated, but the story line, and smooth motion of the enemy characters helps make up for it. It is woefully over priced for a single program--but you get three--that helps a bunch. Overall, the first person shooter type programs could all have been lumped into one story line and call it 'Snipper time', as far as I'm concern. In F.E.A.R., this is not the case at all. Let's just say when you first get the game running...'strange' things begin to happen. It is these strange things keeping the game from getting old. Get ready for a lot of different shades of gray for color and contour. You pump shotgun is still my primary weapon. When the lights flicker...get ready for it. Unlike a lot of modern programs--where the 'alpha' programer keeps building games where you have to get on the yellow brick road and follow it...if you don't, you never complete the game. In F.E.A.R, this is not the case. Apparently there are multible routes you can take--this way, when you complete the game, you can restart it and go a different path each time. In other words, the replayabilitly of this game is pretty fine--that's important. Everytime I play the game (then look at the fifty dollar price tage) I don't feel as stupid for throwing my money away. Those other games, not letting you adventure around, are over priced greatly because of it. Maybe one day they'll learn their lesson. My bottom line: Despite a few minor short comings (many shades of gray, not the highest end graphics--but okay,) I recommend this fps game. |
