Season 4 - The Family Brigade Challenge,
By Ghenghis (Monvolia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: F Word - Series Four (DVD)
Not familiar with the F Word, you should be.
The F Word is a restaurant where teams compete week to week in Gordon's kitchen under his guidance (whip) for nothing but bragging rights, and a free drink at the end of the season, if they survive that long. First, each brigade has to prepare a starter, an entre, and a dessert to Gordon's specifications for 50 people. Not as easy as it sounds. The winners advance based on how many patrons are willing to "pay" for each dish. The winner is rewarded with a silly plastic trophy with that big ugly "F" you see on the DVD cover. This series also features guest celebrities who go head to head with Gordon in the kitchen with a dish of their own choice. Restaurant patrons pick the winner and probably the most hilarious thing I've ever seen is Gordon jumping around like a 12 year old girl when he wins one of these contests against these untrained wannabes. This is probably my favorite feature of the F Word followed closely by field trips to farms, rivers, etc where Gordon gets the straight dope on where his ingredients are coming from. My least favorite feature is a lady named Janet Street-Porter. Some of you may find her to be very funny, Gordon does, and some of you may not. I am one of the people who finds her extremely irritating but Gordon just laughs and laughs at her antics. Field trips this season frequently include Gordon's son Jack, who is the spitting image. Others include a day of training with the Royal Marines, rabbit hunting (and gutting), and a real treat when Gordon flies to Oklahoma (yes, Oklahoma) to go "noodling" (or grabbling) for 20lb. catfish. The entire season is filled with laughs as Gordon shows off his wit, charm, and full dynamism in total contrast to his famous persona. The field trips are also as informative as they are entertaining. This is my favorite of the F Word series that has been released on DVD. However, the absolute best F Word is Series 5, which is a countrywide restaurant challenge where to make the cut these restaurants have to survive an onslaught of 30 diners that all arrive by bus and order en masse. They also have to endure secret diners who are a total pain in the arse and videotape their experiences for Gordon to review. A very good series, and worth waiting for. If you're a fan of G.Ramsay and you're only exposure is the dumbed down Hells Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares on Fox, you owe it to yourself to check this out. You wont be disappointed. BTW, this is totally uncensored, so the F Word has a dual meaning I guess. |
