Walloch bubbles over!,
By A Customer
This review is from: F**k the Disabled (DVD)
I recently viewed this film at the Out On Screen Festival in Vancouver. Greg Walloch's natural charm and talent bubbles over in this film featuring his smart and very funny stage show. "Keeping It Real: Adventures With Greg Walloch" (as the film was titled in the festival) is best when we see Walloch simply telling stories and sharing with his audience, for whom he seems to have a true respect and affection towards. Greg Walloch is the new garde in the tradition of Sandra Burnhard, Spalding Gray, and David Drake, his honest and puckish world view might well shake you up and it will certainly make you laugh. I can't wait to show the DVD to friends who couldn't make the festival. Don't miss this!

Greg Walloch is a brilliant performer--he observes the world deeply, with great compassion and humor. This movie is a tour de force; Greg Walloch is a splendid force of nature.

Not what I thought it would be, but much better. This guy is funny, honest, and real. Wish I lived in NYC, would love to have this guy as a friend. It's hard enough being gay or disabled, but to be both, and have his sense of humor is amazing. The gay humor I laughed at, since I could relate, the disabled humor I too laughed (how can you not) but also went "wow, never thought of that". Makes you think, while laughing; that was a treat.

I'd never heard of Greg until I rented this DVD. I loved it so much, I bought it. Raw, talented, funny, intellectual, insightful, and emotional. It's not too often I have several "laugh out loud" moments anymore, so this was a rare treat.

I rented this film and I was pretty disapointed. With a title like F**k the Disabled, I was expecting something edgy and funny and very in your face. And what you get is a really amaturish documentary (could have used better editing and music) and a lot of long not-funny monolouges by Greg about cake.
That really is the crux of the problem, for the first half of the film Greg just isn't funny. He also has a really odd voice tone that makes him sound like he is about to cry at any moment - it is really irritating. And he constantly punctuates every sentance with "like", "umm", and "yeah". You also notice that no one really laughs at most of his jokes, and he has really lousy comedic timing. At one point he tells this sad sad story about this faith healer, and that is WAY not funny, just poinant and depressing. The F**K the disabled bit was actually the funniest part, and it was only about 5 minutes long. The movie picks up a little towards the end, but it doesn't really get funnier. I liked the bit about how he doesn't want to be the brave heroic disabled poster guy, he just wants to be him... but that moment doesn't make up for the boredom. The rest was just plodding and boring. |
