Wonderful, wonderful game, as an owner of F1 2000, and Grand Prix 2, this game is definately a winner, if you have a machine with alot of horsepower that is. Stunning graphics, if you have the horsepower that is. I have a 1.2Ghtz Athlon Tbird, running 266Mhtz FSB, W/512MB PC133 SDRam, and a GeForce2Pro w/64MB of DDR, and a ATA100 drive. With all graphics options maxed out...

3.0 out of 5 stars Save your bucks for GrandPrix 4
The 3 stars are only for the GRAPHICS.

I earlier reviewed this game after two weeks of its purchase, may that`s the reason i was so exxagerated in judging the game, but when we go deep into the game, one will definitely asuure that this game only a Graphics oriented game and not a true F1 sim. GrandPrix 3 is far more superior in the Physics section and a quarter behind...

5.0 out of 5 stars It's like being Mika Hakkinen, October 1, 2001

I just saw this game this past weekend at the SAP tent at the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis. Their set-up included a mockup McLaren Mercedes cockpit with a flat panel on the front (just like the drivers have when they'r ein the garage!) and then pumped up to a huge projection screen so other race fans could see how you were doing against Michael and Rubens. I would have to say that this was the ONLY way to experience the game, but if you settle for a wheel and some pedals at home, this game is still spectacular. I can't wait for this to be released to the public!

GrandPrix 3 is far more superior in the Physics section and a quarter behind in graphics, but for a true F1 simulator, this isn`t an issue, he looks only for the game play rather than keeping on looking how the car ahead of you looks. Is the rear wing blue in colour or is the wheel having the correct 4 strands as a standard F1 car`s or are the sponsorers` stickers correctly placed in the right place. These are some sticking points which force the buyer to buy this fade-away game.
I first got irritated by seeing all the cars pass by in the 4th and 5th turns in the AUSTRIAN grandPrix where as they can`t come closer to me in the left over turns that are the 1st 2nd 3rd 6th and 7th turns. This is real annoying to F1 gamers.
The same AUSTRIAN grandprix with updated textures is very challenging to drive in GP3 in the same 4th and 5th turns. But even though i try my balls out to drive in the turns in F1`2001 I can`t maintain speed even in the ROOKIE level.

So, finally i pledge to all my Co-F1 hardcore gamers to save their money and wait for Granprix 4 to be released in April - May.
Gp4 is said to be having all the ingredients of F1`2002 except the 2002 drivers, but anyhow you can download patches that keep the game updated.

So look for the best perform-er and not the best Show-er.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stay Clear of E/A, January 27, 2002
This review is from: F1 2001 (CD-ROM)
I took special care to make sure my PC meets the recomended requirements to run this game on outside of box. Everytime I would get to the analizing screen that appears B/4 the game loads my PC would freeze up , and I would have to reset my PC ? E/A support offered nothing more than throwing the problem to my grphics card Company . I spent hours trying every differant setting possible to make this game run , I never was able to make it work. The retailer where I purchased it would not let me return it and would not even let me exchange it for a differant game instead they gave me another copy of the same game saying it may have been a bad burn ? Not so , same exact problm all over again ! My system far exceeds the recomended requirements on the outside of box . My system is a Pentium III 750MHZ 256MB RAM ATI RADEON 32MB Graphics DirectX 8.0 Windows Me O/S.So unless you have a more powerful stystem and a grphics card with 64MB mem. I would stay far away from this . Iam now stuck with a $... coster. They dont tell you on the outside of the box that you may have to spend hours updating drivers to make the game work. No E/A product ever again !

4.0 out of 5 stars F1 2001 is great, but better than GP3 2K?, October 12, 2001

The EA F1 series has evolved from the arcade style battles in previous versions, to a more refined sim in F1 2K Championship. But it never hit the immaculate car control and AI as Grand Prix 3. Sure EA's F1's had better graphics and greater detail on the amount of cranes trackside, but GP3 can't be matched in terms of brake feel, steering feel and acceleration. Then came F1 2001. The audio in this game is worth it to anyone who watches Speedvision early Sunday mornings waiting till the red lights drop. As for the sim aspect, great set up control that finally rivals GP3, very user friendly displays and more adjustments possible on your aero and mechanical grip sections. The manual states that the driveablility was modeled after comments from the BAR team (wouldn't that mean slow by this season's standards...), and the way that the engine pulls when on camber is far better than GP3 or any other game available. But they may have over engineered in terms of oversteer, because it seems like you can't get rid of it no matter how much rear deck lid you put on the car! But the tracks are 2001 spec, the liveries are 2001 spec, you can drive as Montoya and Raikkonen (yes, even Alesi is in B&H garb and HHF is with the Prost team), which is hard to beat with GP3 unless you order the 2000 package from overseas and update it with the track editors. So, after all this, I'm still confused, better than GP3 2K? I think not, but a good improvement that makes me hope that Geoff Crammond and crew can ante up and create a real winner with GP4, but until then I'll be happy with EA's offer.

For a company who puts out one of the best driving games (Need for speed) This one blows! It has all the cars and drivers but none of the action!

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent game despite a few setbacks, October 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: F1 2001 (CD-ROM)
I bought this game with a steering wheel in the hopes of living the F1 dream. In many ways, I did, but it comes standard with steering assistance high, so all I really had to do was accelerate and brake. I turned that off when I realized it.

I have a computer with a 2.0 Ghz P4 and 64MB Geforce 3 card (AKA "THE WORKS") and the cockpit graphics are great, but unless I can tweak it, the circuit graphics could be greatly improved on.

But still, $29.99 is an excellent price to pay for something so good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game for years to come., October 10, 2002

This game, along with the 2 EA patches make the game worth getting. You can also download ALMS and CART mods for the game as well as dozens of new tracks to add to it. Don't listen to the bad reviews, its well worth [the money]. F1 2002 has better graphics and multiplayer, but this game has tons of add-ons. Buy Both!

1.0 out of 5 stars F1 2001 - Really worth it?, July 16, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: F1 2001 (CD-ROM)
I haven't even been able to play F1 2001 becuase of everything that needs to be turned off in order to play it. We have to MANUALLY turn off all background operations, which takes 5 minutes - at least. Then you have to reboot the computer and reset everything. I got it as a birthday gift, but I don't think it's worth all the trouble to play it. I gave it 1-star rating because right now, I don't think very much of it, and I don't think I will. If I could give it less, I would. As for Amazon.com, who don't say ANYTHING about everything you have to do, I give them 1/2 a star - if even that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst force feedback implementation ever, April 28, 2002
By
"ohioracer" (West Chester, OH United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: F1 2001 (CD-ROM)
Just a few things that one should know about this game before buying it.

If one is used to calibrating one's controllers for the best possible feel and use, with this game you cannot. This game inexplicably does not give one any calibration options. At what ever level the game deems to be the maximum braking effort, that is what you get. I can literally stand on my brakes on not get them to lock up. At the three tracks that I tried I had to consistently begin breaking at the first brake marker. In other Formula One sims that I have played, I can brake very late and still make the corners.

The implementation of force feedback is probably the worst thing about this game. It feels as though the car was straddling two ditches. It pulls (hard) and steers to the right, then when you adjust the wheel slightly it pulls (hard) and steers to the left. One ends up on the straights darting left and right trying to control the wheels. The cars are absolutely uncontrollable using force feedback!

About the only thing good about the game is the accuracy of the tracks. They seem to match yard for yard the tracks as shown on television.

So as other reviewers have said, save your money for GP 4 or just about any other driving simulation.
