Weather conditions heighten the experience. Watch the rain clouds swell in the sky above you, see the umbrellas go up, listen to your pit crew's weather updates on the radio, and then, as the heavens open, catch sight of your opponents spinning off the track, crashing into barriers or rushing towards the pits to switch tires and change strategy. You will hear intelligent pit communication from your race engineer, with weather and pit-stop predictions, plus advice on how these things will affect the race. If pit skills are honed, valuable seconds can be saved; if they are not, seconds will be lost. You can turn on the simulation mode and feel the car's handling change to a simulation style, pushing your ability to the limit. Or you can jump into the cockpit for the driver's-eye view and see the wheel wrestling around corners, the gears changing, and the driver gesturing out of frustration, anger, and elation.

The improvements over last year's game are remarkable. One gets more of a feel for the accleration and deceleration that formula one cars are famous for. The detail of both the cars and the tracks are astounding. I thought that in F1 Championship season 2000 all the tracks looked flat. One couldn't get a feel for the ups and downs of some of the inclines and declines that are such a prominent feature to some real F1 tracks. That has changed in this year's game. In particular, going down and then up into au rouge in F1 2001 is a lot of fun. In addition to graphics and game play there are some new multiplayer modes and a challenge mode which allows one to be graded on their driving skills in any and all conditions, for example, taking the chicane at Interlagos in wet weather on dry tires. A true F1 fan will enjoy how recent the game information is (i.e. Alesi is in a Jordan and Frentzen in a Prost), but any fan of driving simulations will find this game fascinating.

Yes it looks good and it sounds good and there is a great sense of speed, but yet another half-baked effort by EA, thrown on the market too soon (to justify the expensive season licence, I suppose).This game is so crippled by bugs that most of its favourable aspects fade away facing the problems. The biggest problems occur around the actual racing. First off there are unrealistic qualifying rosters (4 times World champion Schumacher on 12th? a no-name like Heidfeld on pole?), ALL cars have the same performance parameters (so you can pole in a Minardi!?). The opponent AI ... big time: they are VERY fast in corners but extremely slow on straights (on which you can catch about 5 of them at once). On shorter races opponent cars NEVER pit when it starts raining (and it rains about 3 times in a 16 lap race), plus you are constantly yellow-flagged and penalized when you only put your wheel slightly off track. Add to that other minor things, like not being able to save car setups, not being able to save game stages (only race weekends), no opponent cars on the tracks during practice, all cars have the same sound, weird and sticky car handling when releasing the throttle, most of the tracks beeing way too narrow compared to their real life counterparts, a pit radio that keeps giving you wrong and useless information, and an overall very hectic gameplay that never gives you the feeling that you are in control -- and you got a no winner. Sure, that reflection in Montoya's helmet is awesome, but what good for if it doesn't feel like him. If you are satisfied with eye candy and the occasional lap around Monaco by yourself, then this title is for you. It looks great and it gives you a sense of speed. However, if you are a little more into F1 racing and want to get a feel for the whole thing i recommend 989s Formula One, which looks and sounds inferior but offers a much richer gameplay.

Let me first start off by saying that I am a huge F1 fan. So, When I play this game i expect it to be very similar to the real thing. I already owned EA's F1 2000 and I played it nearly everyday. So when I saw that EA was coming out with F1 2001 at the same time as 989s "Formula 1", I was planning on gettting the 989 versioj to give it a try until i got to the store and saw how much better F1 2001 looked than 989. I thought i could possibly be wasting 50 bucks since i already own a year old version of the same game. Man was i glad i bought the game. EA has made numerous improvements over 2000. NEW FEATURES for 2001:1. The cars are actually DIFFERENT as opposed to just having different paint jobs and noses. Each team car is totally different from the other ones, and for a F1 fan you want your car to actually look like your favorite teams real life car. 2. A new camera view. Finally you can BE the driver. instead of the overhead on-board camerea that is normally used, you can now look through the drivers eyes. and now that F1 2001 has the drivers ripping their "tear-off" visors, when you use this view you are blinded for a second when you tear off a visor. it just makes the game that more realistic. not to mention, you have as hard a time seeing from this view as a driver does in real life. 3. your crew talks to you on the radio. 4. interactive pit stops. no more just turning into the pits and watching. you cannot stop thinking for a second. 5. reflections. it sounds minor, but the reflections on the cars is incredible. 6. dirt. yes, i said dirt. when you go offroad and kick up dirt, the dirt looks so real. especially when you are earning your license and go off the road it pauses while the camera rotates around the car. great graphics. 7. grid girls (and crew). you can sit in your car on the grid surrounded by your crew and beautiful grid girls. 8. rain. again, more great graphics. am i playing a game or watching a race on speedvision? ok, the few drawbacks. in simulation mode, they added tons of settings compared to 2001(tire pressure, gear ratios, and much more). i would say too many, since unless you are a F1 mechanic and know every track it will take you a long time to get the maximum setup. you should be able to control how many setting you want. not just all or none. i dont know who is giving this game bad reviews. probably people who dont like F1 or even motor racing. if you are a F1 fan, gearhead, or any race fan, you must get this game. my PS2 broke 2 weeks after getting the game, so there are probably some more cool features that i havent gotten a chance to see. i cant wait to get my PS2 back so i can play this game some more. 2115|R1N8PR5N7NZNKO;2115|R28ZQRZP2JOA9Z;2115|R29PBEL1UOW0L6;
