EA's F1 Championship Season 2000,
By David Kreeb (Tarpon Springs, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: F1 Championship Season 2000 (Video Game)
The one player mode in this game is great. It has beautiful graphics and unmatched F1 sounds (you can actually hear the wind when passing signs). No opions on building your own driver/car, but I love the Bimmer the way it is anyway, and it would make it difficult to perform as a team if it offered custom cars. I love the fact that up to 4 people can play at a time (22 people in a time trial mode), but I haven't found a way to race friends, and the regular grid which was a slight disapointment. I'm not so sure the wrecks are very realistic, I have been pretty rough on my car and only destroyed it beyond repair once, but the pit stops are beautiful, and the paint gets scrached from debris throughout the race. I would definatly recomend this game for the F1 enthusiast, but due to the level of difficulty, it may not be for everyone. Thanks for reading. Anubis 328

This has been my first experience with a PS2 racing game. My husband and I are big F1 fans are were looking forward to reliving some of the past season's highlights with this game. The graphics are awesome and the sounds are great, too. This is definitely not a game where you can spend a few minutes and figure it out. This game takes time. You pick your car, you figure out what the different set-ups (downforce, tires, gearbox etc) do and you hit the track. On the first rounds all you try to do is keep your guy on the asphalt! I have played racing games with steering wheels before and found those easier to maneuvre than this one with the regular PS2 controller. A PS2 compatible wheel will be my next purchase I guess. The warmup sessions and qualifying are good to practice the driving. I found it very difficult to concentrate on all the information on the screen in the beginning, and the complete race set-up definitely needs some practice. Overall it is a very elaborate and fun game, but take your time to figure out all the different things!

Meets, but doesn't exceed expectations,

This is a great game. It met all of my expectations. But coming from EA Sports, it doesn't exceed them. The commentarist's voice is the same as FIFA 2001, which is kinda weird, but really doesn't matter. What I found surprising was the lack of commentary during the actual race. No commentary takes place when you take the lead, or crash, etc. That kinda left me with an empty feeling. The game's odd way of saving games isn't convenient if you choose to play different championships at one time. Another upset was the fact that you can't create your own team or car. After owning Madden 2001, I am quite spoiled with all of the neat customization features offered by EA Sports' title launch game. But FIFA 2001 doesn't match up to Madden's customization features, and F1 doesn't either. The gameplay however is outstanding. This is a driver's game. It doesn't offer lots of eye candy (it does have excellent graphics though). If you like Formula racing, you'll love this game. EA's reputation was somewhat hurt with Nascar 2001, but this game makes up for it. Very enjoyable, and very addicting.

Racing the way it was meant to be on PS2,

EA has managed to bring all of the excitement of Formula 1 to the playstation 2 in an awesome package- the graphics show incredible detail and doesn't suffer from the jaggies that show up in NASCAR when there's a lot of action on the screen. The controls are very responsive, and all of the teams/drivers are there. I wish there were even more customizability of the car options than the somewhat simple options that are there even in advanced mode... but that said, there's enough in this game for the arcade racing fan to people looking for a realistic sim. There's some tough computer AI which mimics the real life counterpart drivers when you crank up the difficulty, although it is missing some of the features of the PC version, but these can be forgiven as F1 is arguably the best racing title available on the PS2 (until GT3 is released).

I cannot believe the reviews of this game! For one, the PSX version of the game is so much better in terms of game play. I must admit that the PS2 graphics are stunning but c'mon! There is more to a game than just good looks. For one, taking the BMW-Williams, the car does not have the real top speed of the real F1 car. And when qualifying, you are not able to advance the time. Am I expected to sit infront of the game for an actual hour??? Also, you are unable to watch the competition's lap time. Then, EA removes the level of modification allowed on the car. In the PSX version, you can control the amount of steering lock. That is now removed. For me to negotiate a sweeper, I have to induce lift throttle oversteer. And that, my friends, is a bunch o' BS! This game is not a similation. It is now a not so fun and boring arcade game! I regret buying this game and in the process of trying to sell it! I will stick to playing the PSX version on my PS2 console!

F1 Championship PS2,

I have to agree with nismofreak. I am a die hard F1 fan, I have every F1 game made for playstation. The one for PSX to me plays better. You can see other drivers qualify and also see their split times. In this all that happens is the qualifying times show up. The grafics are outstanding but thats it. The engine noise is annoying, gear selection is poor. They also really need blow by blow commentary. this is what Psygnosis has in their F1 that makes it more fun. "Rent first then but."

Best F1 game, but not the best racing game...,

I love racing games, and this is the best F1 game you can buy. It will deliver many hours of fun F1 racing for all racing fans as myself. EA Sports will never let you down with a poor quality game. I expect EA will improve the racing experience in future versions of the game, because in my opinion, the GT3, has taken the experience and fun of racing games to another level. So, my advise is, if you have the GT3...buy this game also, but if you have the money for one game, take first the GT3.

EA Sport did a fairly good job with this game. For a true F1 fan like myself I'm glad to have the opportunity to enjoy the difficulties of F1 racing without busting my bank account. The game has some really cool feature. Great graphics, cool sounds, and multiple angles. In addition, the color scheme of each team is authentic to the driver's gloves and helmets. In short, it's visually gratifying. It does have some shortcomes. The weather is either sunny or pouring. In addition, the AI opponents never make mistakes, and can take corners so fast at times that you'd definitely spin out trying to stay with them. In addition, the change in transmission settings do not seem to effect the top speed a great deal. I do like this game, and I'm looking forward to the next one already. Although it's not perfect, but it's fun, and very realistic in many ways.

OK, but leaves room for improvement,

The game offers stunning graphics and sound. You find all the cars, track and teams/drivers of the 2000 season. The player can select from single races, championship or arcade play modes. All in all I enjoy playing the game but I just wish it would be closer to reality in some aspects. The top speed is too low no matter how you set the car up you rarely get 300km/h. Also the gear box ratios are questionable: e.g. 1st takes to 160km/h. The speed you take through corners is mostly too high, so you can go flat out in 7th through the chicanes in Monza, Hockenheim or Spa. The qualifying time table only shows the total lap time. Those the FIA offers show sector times so you could check how you do in comparison with other drivers and learn about their setup. The qualifying mode definitely lacks a FastForward mode, the fact that tracks get faster is ignored. The warm-up is too long (60min). Also I wish the weather would change and not stay consistent throughout the whole race. If you select tire wear you have to pit every 8 or 9 laps to replace them. I think the technical basis of the game is well executed but it could be a lot better if some of those details were better solved.

Wish More PS/One Options Were There...But Very Good!,

If you have not seen or played the standard Playstation version of this game, you would probably give it five stars! However, there are a few things missing from the PS/One version that I wish were there. Here are a few you might miss...- being able to check car settings during practice (see how much you are stressing the engine) - the commentary from your crew chief is missing (how much the car behind you is gaining, or come into the pits for new tires) - speed up the timer during qualifications and see who is on the track. - wish the downshifting pops from the car were there! Other than those (and a few others), the game is great and the graphics and sounds are wonderful!!! I would like to have seen a difference in sound between the different cars (since they do sound different in person) and different sounds depending on your driving angle (in car, behind car, bumper cam, etc). But that's just me wishing for everything! Remember, there is always next year's release!!! Go ahead and buy it, if you like F-1! It's great!!! |
