This review is from: F1 Formula 1 2009 (Video Game)
Codemasters has been one of the best racing simulator companies out there. The company made fantastic IndyCar Series games in 2003 and 2004. TOCA Race Driver 2 and 3 are probably even better than the much more heralded Gran Turismo 4. The company announced in 2008 that it would be making Formula One games starting in 2009. Formula One is not as popular here in the U.S. as it is in Europe and the first two Formula One games made for the PSP were not released in the U.S. I was very relieved when this game made its way to American shelves in late 2009.The graphics are probably the best I've seen for any PSP game. Each track features a great amount of detail from the fans waving flags in the grandstands to the pit and paddock areas adjacent to the frontstretch. The game also features the street courses in Singapore and Valencia which were new to F1 in 2008 and the stunning Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Each track looks amazing especially the Singapore course which is set in downtown Singapore at night but unfortunately the Yas Marina course is not available to drive at night as it is in more recent F1 titles. While the visuals are very good I have to say that I wasn't a huge fan of the AI in this game. Even in the most difficult setting the other cars are way too easy to pass. Even once you get past the other cars you have to worry about them not slowing down enough in the corners and ramming the rear end of your car. I finally had to turn off the damage setting because other cars kept slamming me at just about every corner of every track and knocking off my rear wing. This is an issue on most tracks in the game but in Monaco you'll get hit 3-4 times a lap. The controls are also OK. Something just doesn't feel right about the way the cars handle. For example any time you touch the brakes all you hear is the screeching of your tires. This also creates issues because the brakes lock up and you often find yourself unable to make the apex of certain corners. For anyone who has played older F1 games such as F1 2001 and F1 2002 from EA Sports you'll notice that the cars in this game don't seem to have nearly as much grip as they should. This was somewhat surprising as Codemasters' TOCA Race Driver 3 from 2005 featured Formula One cars and they drove great and felt very realistic. I would have to say that this certainly isn't the best Formula One game out there but it is one of the better racing games for the Portable Playstation. Fans of Formula One racing will certainly enjoy this game but it just seems that there are a few things that could be improved. Until Codemasters realeases a new PSP F1 title this solid racing game is great for racing fans and fans of Formula One.
