Format: Paperback
This is an excellent Squadron Signal Publication providing an overview of the F6F Grumman Hellcat fighter in action. Jim Sullivan, author of many other titles, has put forth an examination of this amazing fighters development and combat history. As with other titles from Squadron Signal Publication, concise text detailing development, line drawings of modifications and parts, archival and well captioned photographs, and superb color profiles facilitate an aviation enthusiast's or model builder's appreciation for this aircraft. There is an earlier edition which you may wish to examine: F6F Hellcat in Action - Aircraft No. 36. Also the "walk around" edition is a great companion volume! F6F Hellcat - Walk Around No. 9. I highly recommend the Squadron Signal Publication books! Other related titles to consider: Grumman Biplane Fighters in Action - Aircraft No. 160 F4F Wildcat - Walk Around No. 4 F4F Wildcat in Action - Aircraft No. 84. From Osprey Publishing Aircraft of the Aces series Hellcat Aces of World War 2 (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 10). Roaring Glory Warbirds Video series Roaring Glory Warbirds, Vol. 1: Grumman F6F Hellcat is excellent!

I own seventeen Squadron/Signal aircraft "-In Action" books, and this one is terrible.

Normally you get a very detailed history of the developemnet and deployment of the plane in question. This book has almost NO TEXT whatsoever, and is loaded with pages and pages of B&W photos. I don't mind the photos, but was very disappointed paying money for them when I could download them for free on the internet. I wanted the detailed history I have gotten with other Squadron/Signal titles. Matbe the original Hellcat in Action #36 was much better... LITERALLY: pages 4, 5, & 7 have text... then you have to turn to PAGE 25(!) before you get any more history! Then, 11 MORE PAGES to page 36 for any more narration! You get less than 1/2 page on p. 42... Three short paragraphs taking up less than 1/4 of a page on p. 50... Something (barely) on page 55, 58, & 60.

Basically, about six pages of information about the plane, and 54 pages of black & white photos that can be downloaded from the internet for free...

This one is really not worth the money. If I could look at #36 for free, i might buy it.
