About the Author

Aryn Bartley is pursuing her PhD at Michigan State University. Her research focuses on representations of the gendered, racialized body in modern American cinema and literature. The portrayal of the black male as "other" in "buddy films" represents one particularly disturbing locus of this hegemonic social construction. She is currently researching representations of the grotesque body in mid-century American literature. Other interests include modern drama, women’s literature, film, and cultural studies. Leslie Atkins Durham is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre Arts at Boise State University. Her writings on Gertrude Stein have appeared in The Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, Text and Presentation, and Theatre Journal. Palgrave Macmillan published her book, Staging Gertrude Stein: Absence, Culture, and the Landscape of the American Alternative Theatre in October 2005.

Michael Modarelli is a Ph.D. candidate in English Literature at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with interests in theater and gender issues.

Joanne Taylor is currently a PhD student in the Performance Studies program at the University of California, Berkeley. Her current research is concerned with cinematic experiences: the lived conditions of the filming process through to the moment of viewing; how we might articulate film performance on its own terms; and the ways in which the viewer completes the performance. She has also presented and published on film acting/performance, the performance of identity creation in popular music, and Heiner Müller’s Brechtian dramaturgy.
