Grade 4-6 In this sequel to The White Archer (HBJ, 1979), Kungo returns to the strange old couple who gave him his magic bow and white skins, only to discover that his Inuit people are starving. To find the missing caribou for them, and to forestall a budding feud with the Indians living further inland, he sets out on a hazardous journey that again unites him with his beloved sister and her new family. As usual, Houston's spare prose takes readers to a world far removed from their own. It is a world where the supernatural, as well as privation and constant physical danger are taken for granted, where, with courage and a bit of ingenuity, great obstacles can be overcome. Soft black-and-white illustrations bring the story's light and dark moments into higher relief, sometimes showing a major dramatic scene, other times a minor, passing incident, always capturing some exotic detail of dress or behavior.
