5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ and more February 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm a librarian and have lived with books for many years. I ordered Scrubbing My Soul not knowing what I would find. I was pleasantly surprised. Instead of writing in a tight action genre formula novel, the author reached for more. By that I mean he has told five stories with this book. I was swept up in the action of the main plot, the scam attempted for the children; but also told is the story of the German cop out to get the protagonist, that of the uber bad guy tracking our team of scamers, and of course the story of Bartholomew, the Jamaican ladies'man, and lastly the story of Bartholomew's son, a mulatto boy who goes to live with his German grandparents.

By attempting so much, the book ultimately becomes a statement about race relations in Germany. By always showing and not telling, this new author has transcended his genre.

I would say there were a few short moments when I resented the introduction of new characters and wondered why the he would bring them into the story, but in the end he cleanly and satisfyingly ties up all the loose ends. I was happy with the ending and with the story, and surprised that a new author would attempt so much.

Upon reading the author's blog, however,I learned that he had been in jail in Africa, and wrote the book to help him come to terms with having watched a young boy being beaten by police. Then I understood. With his writing the author saved five children for the one he could not save in Africa. I am impressed and will definately buy more from this writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars What? Who? How? Where? When? September 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I started reading Falling Up by Kevin R Hill last night and every time I thought I had figured out answers to my questions the book took another turn so I had to keep reading! When I finally fell asleep I dreamed about the book! First thing I did when I woke up was to start reading and finished the book. Mr. Hill did an excellent job on his first novel and can't wait to read his next one!

More About the Author

My travel articles have appeared in the Denver Post, the New Orleans Times-Picayune, The Montreal Gazette, and other newspapers around the world. Currently I write a fun column for a national magazine. Promoting my children's book, Wow Wendy Saves the World, published in Spanish and English, and my suspense novel, FALLING UP, as well as my book of funny short stories (WHERE THE GECKOS LAUGH)of when I moved into an abandoned house on the Caribbean to write, keep me busy.

You could say I'm an international. As a young man I was swept up in a sub-culture known as travelers, and hitch hiked around Europe, Israel and Africa for many years, harvested hay, apples and bananas. Eventually I settled into an abandoned house on the Caribbean, and had to daily spear fish to eat. During the heat of the day, and at night, I clanked out the first drafts of FALLING UP, on a little manual typewriter while fighting mosquitoes. The love I lived, the raw freedom of life on the road, the dramatic beauty and death I witnessed in Africa, all changed me. And I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything. They are who I am.
