Editorial Reviews

Review

"They manage to keep my attention for the entirety. And you know how happy educators like me get when the kids read these days instead of simply wasting their time with video games, charm bracelets, and fake nails - Vanity Fair Magazine

"Bluewater Productions creates intelligent, well-examined biographies of authors and stars as well as political and historic figures. If readers are looking for factual insights, relevant information, and terrific art, these books are a great source." Anne Elizabeth Columnist RT Book Reviews Mag

"I wanted to express once again how thrilling it was to have you come yesterday and conduct your workshop. The kids were over the moon about it. We never, ever have them asking, 'will you do this again?'" Sue Decker Librarian Sherwood Public Library

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this! May 18, 2012
Format:Paperback
Comic biographies are tricky business, plagued with art complexity. When we read fictional stories, we create iconography based upon how the characters are described or drawn. Not so in a biography of a famous person because the reader is already familiar with what the person looks like. The Fame series is a great way for people to see their favorite celebrities in a different world...the comic book world!

Realistic art requires every single image of the person be spot-on accurate and recognizable. There is no room for wonky faces or goofy facial elements and no tolerance for strange positions or awkward faces or hands. They must look like themselves in each panel. Realism must be realistic. The other choice is iconic or cartoony art, whereas the image is not a replication of the person but merely an iconic representation. This approach allows for more artistic license.

Bluewater Productions has produced several nonfiction comics, all of which have used realism with differening success.

As Scott McCloud puts it in UNDERSTANDING COMICS (pg. 30) "by stripping down an image to its essential `meaning,' an artist can amplify that meaning in a way that realistic art can't."

I loved it! Pick up the Fame series...a true fun ride. The art in the Suzanne Collins book is just amazing as well as the storytelling!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully laid out and fun to read April 5, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'd received a PDF version of this to read weeks back, but I pre-ordered a copy anyway so that I could have something in my hands. The comic is smaller than I expected and bound a little differently than traditional stapled comics, but the art inside is still just as great as in the e-version I read.

The author and illustrator take you through the life of Suzanne Collins from her time as a little girl listening to her military dad tell her stories of the war to her college days and then on to her television writing days, finally ending with Suzanne walking the red carpet at the premiere for The Hunger Games movie. I'm not the greatest fan of the all blue cover, but that may be because of the comic company being called "Bluewater Productions". The art on the inside is more of a anime type style, so don't expect the art style from the cover to match the inner pages.

Overall, it's an enjoyable read and an inexpensive addition to your Hunger Games collection!
