This is probably one of the greatest games on the NES, I remember a long time ago when I was about 4 or 5 I'd often find myself playing this rather than Zelda!! This game as well as its creator Hudson Soft deserves a lot of credit, this is a truly special game from a company that doesn't normally make RPG's. Unfortunately this game was heavily overshadowed by games like Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Warrior. That's truly a shame because this is a gem and I encourage anyone that has a nostalgic bone in their body to purchase this game, you won't be disappointed.

Ok now that that's settled on to business.

Faxanadu is a side-scrolling RPG in which you travel to different villages in search of a antidote to the poisoned water in your village Eolis. You can talk to people by entering homes and the ensuing conversation can look rather comical because the person's face that appears next to the text animates to look like it's speaking (remember this is the NES were talking about here hahaha).

You can also purchase magic and weapons in the villages to help you defeat the legions of difficult monsters that you'll encounter as you traverse through the game. This game can be very difficult too because the enemies will relentlessly pursue you, but Hudson Soft made sure that the controls were pretty solid so that's a big plus. The bosses can be especially tough so you need to save as much gold as possible to get the best spells and weapons to brandish (oh and let's not forget about potions and the like).

The music is interesting and suits the situations that you're in, whether you're in caves, out on the land, in villages, etc. The boss music is something I remember very clearly and it has very evil sound to it, fitting of course.

I hope people will find this review helpful (since I'm the first to post for this game which is shocking to me) and that it will encourage you to buy this game. This is my first review on Amazon.com and I tried my best on this review in a very limited time frame. ^_-

In this day of 3D graphics and online RPGs, many people have forgotten some of the classics that got us to this point.
Faxanadu was one of these games. One of the earliest side-scrolling RPGs, it ranks right up there with Wizards and Warriors and Legacy of the Wizard.
If you want to go back to your childhood, this is one of the best games to do it with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best NES game made, August 6, 2009

Back in my day, I played this game more than all others combined. It never has been a well known game and I never understood why. While the graphics are dated and admittedly primitive by today's standards, it's a solid adventure. It has a "Lord of the rings" / `middle ages' feel and put into a side-scrolling format. The entire game is fought with edged weapons and magic powers. Your character receives protection with a shield and suit of armor. As the quest progresses, you'll need to purchase better / more powerful equipment.

My only complaint is with how difficult it is to resume your game. The string of code has both upper and lower case letters, as well as numbers. If even one character in the string is off . . . you're screwed.

This and Zelda are basically the great-granddaddy's of all your modern fantasy games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Overlooked Gem, August 8, 2010
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: FAXANADU (Video Game)
Though this game is far from complex and is seriously dated, nonetheless it is a fun and interesting classic medieval side scroller. The game is difficult which is a plus, considering how easy action RPGs are nowadays. Gaining equipment takes a lot of time and effort in collecting money and saving. Experience points are important and gaining levels actually makes a huge impact.

My only beef is that most of the enemies have rather predictable and annoying patterns of movement which makes fighting some a little monotonous. The music is great for NES and the graphics are on par with many of the games of this era.

I recommend playing on an emulator so that you can use the save state function rather than the password system.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great adventure game, July 2, 2010

rumors are true rumor is about this game is it is good, and those rumors are absolutely true. I can't really say anything bad about this game except one thing the password system is just silly way too long. Plus this game really seems like it ought to have the instruction manual the in game doesn't explain how the leveling or magic really words. That and talents like kung fu or material arts???
