Grade 6-9-- McKenzie Gold is a plucky high school junior who has unusual psychic powers that both fascinate and distress her. She hopes the new psychology teacher, Dr. John Chaney, will help her overcome her unsettling visions as well as her more mundane fear of heights. His handsome looks and charming manner cannot disspell the chill he elicits in her, however, for he seems to derive pleasure from the small cruelties he inflicts upon students in class. As it turns out, they are being used as guinea pigs in his clandestine Fear Experiment. His victims are drawn in rather broad strokes; the emphasis here is strictly on action. Harris stretches credulity somewhat with two paranormal occurrences--a photograph streaming blood and a locked door opening by telekinesis--but reluctant readers and fans of Stine's horror novels will enjoy this chilling page-turner. --Susan W.
