Product Description

GameSpot Review

FIFA 2000 is another EA Sports title to reach the Game Boy courtesy of THQ. But instead of tight control and solid gameplay like Madden 2000, this cart suffers from abysmal control. As any soccer fan will tell you, passing is key to winning. It's also key to playing. If you can't pass the ball accurately, then you might as well get off the field. Unfortunately, this game has some of the worst control to ever hit a soccer title. There are no arrows to indicate where offscreen teammates are, so making a long pass up the field requires more than a little faith that someone will be there to receive it. Pressing A to switch to the player nearest the ball often results in nothing, and combining the control pad and A to pass the ball generally winds up with the ball rolling awkwardly to no one in particular, only to be scooped up by a member of the opposing team. All of the usual undefeatable European teams are here, from Germany to England to Argentina. You can even play as the THQ team, which, as you may have guessed, has the best team in the game with full attribute points in everything from shooting to defense to its goalies. The graphics for the most part are tight: You can see the checkered pattern on the ball; players do a funky chicken-style dance when they score; and the grass even has its own textures. Sounds are pretty much absent, with music only playing during the pause screen and little more than the referee's whistle sounding during an infraction. The game could have been a modest success, as it has scores of teams to choose from, a bevy of options, and even an indoor soccer game that plays ten times faster than the regular form. But undercutting all of these features and ultimately sinking FIFA 2000 is poor control that makes the game harder to control than it needs to be.--Doug Trueman--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. 3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay - a little disappointing., November 19, 1999

FIFA 2000 is a good game. I am disappointed about several things:

1. The graphics are not much of an improvement over FIFA 99, and the players' faces and hair are actually kind of goofy.

2. The refereeing is terrible! I got 4 red cards the first time I played. I mean, refs are bad in real life, but this is horrid.

3. The MLS license is almost meaningless since a) the rosters are wrong and b) you can't play an MLS season with playoffs, you have custom make your own. Plus, they didn't get the uniforms right.

I am awaiting Konami's Major League Soccer. Konami's International Superstar Soccer has always had the better gameplay, in my opinion, but has suffered because they didn't have the FIFA license. Maybe now with the MLS license, they can have a more successful game.

The game is still fun, even though it's very difficult to play good defense and your players don't mark their men for anything. The most dangerous situation in the game is a free kick from around midfield, because they are going to lob it into the box where a (completely unmarked) striker will make a perfect glancing header to beat your out of position goalkeeping.

THAT'S irritating.

FIFA 2000 - Not bad. Could be better. Can't wait to see a FIFA game on PS2 or Dreamcast.

3.0 out of 5 stars What's wrong with EA!, November 7, 1999

The much anticipated FIFA 2000 has been a big disappointment. I think FIFA 99 is better. Even the opening video is senseless. The graphics are good but the player faces look so cartoony! And their arms look like sticks attached to their body. One good aspect of the game is the crowd animation. The stadiums really do look good but before a playing a match, one can't choose the stadium he wants to play in. This is a major disappointment when compared to their previous releases.

I thought Fifa 2000's gameplay is only slightly better than fifa 99.Though I also think they overdid did the slide tackle a bit the referee nearly always gives a free kick.I was very impressed with the season mode because in it teams can get promoted and relagated and you can play in all the cups some of which you couldnt participate in in the past fifa's.I also really liked the music to it.In Fifa 99 I was slightly dissapointed that you couldnt play in the indoor mode and I was expecting you to be able to do so in Fifa 2000.And I think that it's a shame that you can't pick what stadium your playing in and you have to go into options to select the match length.Overall the gameplay just improved but some of the other features such as season mode and the classic teams which you can play with are superb and apart from a few features that featured in fifa 99 and not in fifa 2000 .It is an improvement
