MLS?,

This review is from: FIFA 2000 (CD-ROM)
I knew I was in trouble when I saw Eddie Pope on the cover of the box instead of a proper footballer like Beckham, Yorke, or Rivaldo. Who buys FIFA 2000 to play mediocre MLS teams, or hear American announcers who sound as though they've just gotten out of bed. Where is their enthuisiasm and their spirit. What about the idea that the announcers broadcasting the game should know the names of the players? They act as though every match they were broadcasting were as boring as the typical Wimbledon vs. Derby County fixture. I liked the game better when EA didn't try to Americanize it. Basically all of the negative reviews that have been posted so far are on target.

FIFA series is rolling down,

FIFA 2K haven't met my expectations. By far the best game FIFA 98, were you could dribble opponents, score from distance, and have a chance (as in real life soccer) to face the keeper one on one, and choose were to score. In FIFA 2K it is almost impossible to change the direction of a shot; all you can do is shoot to the same direction you are running. It is absolutely impossible to score from medium/long distance (as you can see over the soccer leagues all over the world). And most annoying of all is that all the crosses to your own goal (including corner kicks) are always goal. The actual shielding option is something good, as well as the AI, but why do Easport take out features that were fine in previous versions of the game? What is that nonsense of Israeli and Turkish leagues? That's crap. The Argentinean league should be in the game. How do you dare (people from easports) not including Uruguay (twice World cup champions)as a national team option, and most of all Uruguay of 1950, who achieved the most important victory in the history of soccer, by defeating Brazil in the world cup final at their stadium of Maracana in front of 200,000 people? The game is disappointing.

I was really anticipating the arrival of FIFA 2000. I thought it would improve on Fifa'99. Instead E.A sports went backwards. What's with the American commentators. They sound like their commentating a hockey game. Also, they added mediocre leagues such as Israel and Turkey and took out the Portugese league and other than Brazil, still have not added any of the South American leagues such as Argentina or Colombia. Futhermore, they don't allow you to play as more than 8 teams when creating a tournament. What's with that? Before you could choose to play as almost all the teams. This game really sucks compared to older FIFA games. (Bring back the British commentators, atleast it sounds like a soccer game).

Patches, patches, patches.,

Why Americanize the game when it's a world sport?1) Commentary just flat out stinks! Download the English commentary patch with Motson, Lawerenson, and Lineker. A piano dropping out of the sky? 2) Facial features looks terrible and was much more realistic in 99. 3) Player skill moves are neglected. Still can't do the nutmeg on the keyboard. The straight arms and shielding is okay. 4) Difficulty: Much easier to pass defenders in world class mode. Way too hard to connect on crosses unless it is a set piece. Most of the time the ball drops real softly toward goal when you try to get a good header from a running cross. 5) Graphics: Behind the net cam is nice and so is the slow motion replay, but the facial features looked way too unlike the players in real life. More like cartoon interpretations. 6) The player attributes scale doesn't really distinguish them by much. The 1-7 scale is too narrow, and why does non-keepers have goalkeeper ratings? 7) Introducing set pieces were okay, but you can't pick who you want as the three choices they give you in team management. That gets frustrating when you have a weaker player who can't head the ball. 8) Tackling: The dive button they introduced can make it frustrating when it seems the defender flat out chopped your legs off and there is no card! 9) The only real plus about the game is the added choices for IGM. You can change formations for the front, midfield, and back line. 10) The music was alright too. Robbie Williams was a good pick. I was really disappointed the first time I played this game, and thought 99 was much better. The only consolation is when I began to play with friends and that made it worth it. Just remember to download patches. They have a lot of improvement to do.

EA has messed up this franchise,
This review is from: FIFA 2000 (CD-ROM)
Can I ask 1 Question.. Why did EA mess up this series? I havn't played the whole series, I have 98, 99 and 2000 but gosh man, they really messed this one up. 1. Graphics - The graphics look very good. The player faces could have been better, but they are adequate. I like the crowd jumping up and clapping. From a distance, it does look realistic.2. Sound - I wish i received the European version. I have the commentry off, all i have to is it really sucks! The crowd cheering is really cool, though it would have been nice to have crowd biasness in home games. 3. Gameplay - Purely disgusting. Where have most of the skill moves gone! Although the ball physics are much more realistic, it is much to easy for the computer to pick off your passess. And I hate the free kick arrow, its is horrible. It uses a power bar which really fails. Also, when taking corners from the opposite side of the field, you can't see the power bar so you have no idea how hard you kick. One of my BIGGEST problems is the refree strictness. I put the refree strictness bar on full and the computer gets away with slide tackles from behind all the time, even when i am running with no one infront of me. This one really gets me mad! In conclusion, I have given up on this game. I jump back to Fifa 99, its much much much better than this piece of junk.

A shame!,
By Paulo Soares (Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: FIFA 2000 (CD-ROM)
This time EA Sports really screwed it up... That once thrilling, fun game has become an annoying, outstandingly boring piece of junk. Why do they change stuff no one complained about? We can no longer choose in what stadium to play, transfers have become a hard-to-solve puzzle -- due to a ridiculous money limit --, we can't choose more than 8 teams in a league or merely one in a season... They completely messed up the Brazilian league, reducing it to 7 teams and making the players' names unrecognizable. And how was the game "improved"? They created the season mode -- be careful: if you get down to 2nd division, there's no 2nd division to play in! Oh, they added the MLS, even though no one had asked for it. And they added classical teams, which created some funny situations: you can easily beat Holland '74 playing for Al-Nasr in the professional mode; however, in the World class mode, you can't even beat Al-Nasr, even if you are a '74 Dutch! I've been buying the series since '97, and all that could be asked for was maybe the Argentine league. Now we have the pathetic leagues from Israel, Turkey, but we didn't get Argentina -- and lost Portugal. A shame!

FIFA2000-MLS doesn't deliver what it promises.,
By A Customer
This review is from: FIFA 2000 (CD-ROM)
Where to begin... Their own box promises Major League Soccer, and yet when you load it up you find no option to play a season in this league. EA did a miserable job of researching the players. The box boasts "All the players." Many key players are missing worldwide, let alone in the MLS (Kubik, Moreno, McBride, R. Williams...the list goes on..) I would forgive all this if they gave the user a good editor to change it with... but it's the same useless editing system FIFA99 had.Other disappointments... You can only play as one team in a season, unlike in past versions where you could play as all if you wanted to. The game speed is like a juiced up hockey game and nothing at all like a real organized soccer match. (EA... if you can give Normal, Fast, Faster and Fastest... why not slow, slower and simulation speed? ) (People who played the earlier versions of this game will miss John Motson. They have been replaced by some mediocre, at best, commentary from Julie Foudy and Phil Schoen.)

A good arcade game, poor simulation game,
By
This review is from: FIFA 2000 (CD-ROM)
I would rate this higher than FIFA '99, but much lower than the WC98 games. I like it better than 99 b/c I can compete at the World Class level, but doing so reveals the game's major flaws. This game is meant to be an action/arcade game, and is not a serious attempt at sports simulation. The only useful strategy I can give a player is to score goals. If you stop attacking at all, you will regret it (for ex. I lost a 3-1 lead w/ 10 minutes to go using standard defensive strategies). The only good defense in this game is a good offense. The amount of goals scored and the distribution of goals are ludicrous. 13 games into the Premier season, I as Leeds United have scored 47 goals, 35 of those by the 2 forwards (Huckerby, Bridges). The gameplay awards knowledge of knowing when to press the right button, not knowledge of football (soccer). As far as the announcers go, they do sound totally wrong announcing European games (they're fine if you stick to MLS). As bad as they are, I don't find them as annoying as John Motson's sidekick from FIFA 99 (that guy sounded like a parrot). There are also key players missing from some teams (especially in the MLS).There aren't any real stadiums in the game either. (Those with RIVA 128/TNT graphics cards will have to download new Detonator drivers to make the game work) The positives about the game are the great graphics (although the players are skinny, and the screen jumps sometimes when the computer has to read the CD). It has classic teams, such as Man. United '68 and Brazil '70, that make for some fun matchups. And as unrealistic as it is, it's fun to play.

What Happened?,
This review is from: FIFA 2000 (CD-ROM)
There are so many flaws with this game it's funny. The only good thing is the the animation on the players' faces and the animated crowd. Now for the flaws: 1) The Commentary. There is only one word to describe it: horrible. What happened to John Motson? "Phil and Judy" sound like morons. It seems like they only know one player's name on each team. In '99, Motson named at least a few players on each team. Phil and Judy do not sound the least bit realistic in their "commentary." Also, not every team is introduced by "Randy" at the beginning of each game. It's obvious that they were too stupid or prejudiced to say "Saudi Arabia, Al Wasl, Al Nasr, Al Ahly," etc. 2) MLS. Merely adding the MLS shows what level that EA has sunk to. And since they added the MLS, they might as well have allowed you to play in an MLS season. Pathetic. 3) The faces on almost every black player look distorted. When I played this game for the first time, I used Manchester United. The faces on Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke looked horrible. They didn't even look realistic at all. When I began to play the game more, I realized that almost every black player's face was like this. Another biased feature of FIFA 2000. 4) The shielding does not work. They can still tackle the ball away from you! 5) There are no sideline players visible during the gameplay. The sidelines are completely empty! 6) Difficulty levels. Once you play the game for a while, you will realize that the "Professional" level is extremely easy, while in "World Class," it is almost impossible to retain control of the ball and stop the opposition from scoring. 7) The season mode is ridiculous. Andy Cole was averaging a hat trick a game when I played as Manchester. The Bottom Line: EA Sports has some serious, serious work to do if 01 doesn't end up a pile of garbage like 00.

Messing with things that worked...,
By Carbonero (Gainesville, VA USA) - See all my reviews

Just a shame that many things do not work anymore as they did on previous versions. It seems they tried to improve details instead of major things like more leagues that matter. Where is the Argentinian league? When are they going to realize that it is one of the best leagues in the world? I'm sad to say that I have lost faith in EA Sports and how they put out games. It's a shame that they seem to go backwards.
