This game has improved greatly from FIFA 2001. Before it came out I considered not buying it because of the slight improvements in the older versions, but I played the demo and they proved me wrong!

Reasons:

On FIFA 2001 it was impossible to score from long range in open play. On FIFA 2002 you can score if you get the power of the shot right.

Why can't we finally get a defintive FIFA game? This game is loaded with problems.

1. Teams...
Yeah, I know that there are hundreds of club teams, but in "1998 Road to the World Cup," EA sports managed to include EVERY team in the qualifying rounds. They even had the names of all they players! You could even play Puerto Rico vs. Domincan Republic. Now, the African and Oceania groups are AWOL, and many players names are represented by numbers.

2. Stadiums...
Only five! In "1998," there was stadiums from all over the world with intro videos to the country. Match-ups between smaller teams had smaller crowds. It was much more realistic to use the "Trinidad & Tobago" stadium when using smaller clubs. I just can't play MLS games in "2002" in front of 80,000 fans. It just doesn't seem believable. Plus, you don't have a consistent stadium for your "home" club games.

3. AI
Unfair and unrealistic. You have a choice: you can either blow away competition at the "Amateur" level, or you can lose 1-0 moral victories in which your team manages 2 shots on goal. I'm afraid to try the "World Class." The computer anticipates all of your passes, wins 90% of the air balls, and makes it generally impossible for you to get any offensive flow.

4. Gameplay
Ohh, this burns me. A lot of the skill moves in the past apparently are not available. For example, you can no longer dive to draw fouls. Everytime the computer falls after a sliding tackle is a foul. It's so irritating. The players only shoot with one foot.

Yes, there are improvements, but in some ways this game feels like a step backward. With the World Cup in the near future, we deserved something better.

Don't believe the hype. Don't waste your money.

New Passing and Shooting Systems make it more realistic to play. You can now pass the ball into space and make players without the ball run onto the ball.

More skill moves. What I want to see! It hasn't caught up to the International Superstar Soccer Series yet, where you can do rainbow kicks, tap-ip's, and trademark moves, but it's getting there.

So, buy FIFA 2002 now because it's a great game and it has improved a LOT from FIFA 2001.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, November 15, 2001
By A Customer

Not bad; the best since FIFA 98 RTWC...Cheezy that they leave out the actual World Cup; rather the game just allows World Cup Qualifying (although the Custom tournament mode allows fo rthe creation of a World Cup, but the lack of African teams disturbs me greatly...again, though, I can "create" them too if I want...all this is because, like EA's World Cup 98, they will be putting out a game just prior to World Cup 2002 that will focus upon the teams and venuew fro specifically World Cup...but still...)

the graphics are okay; with a GeForce 3 they are superb. Crowd reactions were supposed to be revamped; if they were, I don't really see it.

Gameplay is very good, except that the passing model, while much better, is a little artificially achieved in that one must be at one of the eight gamepad angles to effectively deliver a pass (no analog). Other than that, the adjustability of the experience is a key update.

Not bad; much MUCH better than FIFA 2000 and 2001.

The World Cup is on TV. The US National team is playing well, and I really wanted a good soccer game to quench my thirst for the World's game. This is not that game. I could tell you how beautiful the animations are (they are lovely). I could fill you in on how much I like the commentary (much better than Madden). I could let you know how crisp the stadiums are and how easy the management tools can be, but that would be pointless. The ugly truth is that soccer is a sport, sports are by nature quick and unforgiving, this game does its best to frustrate you by making precise control of your players impossible. The passing is, while simple, a grotesque piece of rubbish. The movements of your players are taken over by the computer while the ball is in the air, so you're constantly out of position (I still haven't figured out the logic behind this). All in all it makes a mockery of the game. FIFA 2002 for the PC is a lot like a vacuous super model...it's pretty to look at but empty inside. Not worth a dime.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it should be, April 17, 2002

Although I enjoyed myself greatly playing this game, after doing so for a while I came to the realization that the only sure way to score is individual play - no teamwork necessary. This is hardly realistic.

However, if you take the time to patch this game with one of the many gameplay patches available at the game's site, the experience will improve. The patch fixes a number of unrealistic instances in the title, such as the goals your opponent will score from the middle of the field, and a seemingly biased referee who overlooks CPU offsides.

The graphics are rather good, though not as good as in Fifa World Cup 2002 or Pro Evolution Soccer (PS2). There is, most certainly, room for improvement in this area.

But the most important area, namely gameplay, is the real problem. Fifa 98: Road to World Cup, released years ago (in 97) far surpasses the gameplay, realism and, most importantly, fun factor of Fifa 2002.

For a better PC footie game, try Actua Soccer 3.

I have been playing FIFA since the first version was out. frankly I have been obsessed with FIFA for many years. But overall, I think that FIFA2002 has made the most progress. It has been add more team management, and made more challenging. In FIFA2001, I always won like 10-0. But now I have to really concentrate on every single game. Player positions are also taken into consideration by EA this year. In the past, you could make Ronaldo play defender, so still do very well at it. And now, this kind of problems don't exist anymore. Player also have to control the strength of pass now, which is also revolutionary. Your passes are not always accurate anymore, you have to think before every single pass. Overall, FIFA2002 is made for the really gamers. I hope you all like it.

1.0 out of 5 stars This game sucks., March 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: FIFA Soccer 2002 (CD-ROM)
I am truly deeply disspointed by EA sports. I have played all the EA sport soccer games since fifa 96. However, I am more often dissapointed than satisfied with their games. Here are two big issues:

First of all, this game is created by a bunch of people who never play soccer. The game is soooo unrealistic. Soccer is a team sport, but the game shows nothing about it. The best you can do is to get a fast forward to outrun all the defenders and shoot before the goal, skill doesn't matter at all. These are most common goals in all fifa games, boring! Or like in fifa 2001, you can have a fast forward to bring the ball towards the endline and then cross a volley to the middle and another forward can then head it home. It works every time, but still boring. In reality there are a thousand ways to score a goal, but in the game, you can left with only one way or two. You can never do things like in real soccer. Your teammates never run to open space or create open space at all while you control the ball. Your defenders fall for long ball + the fast forwards controlled by the computer every time. I can't help wondering, how can a game, which has more than 6 years of history, still leave so many things to be desired?!

Secondly, there is no consistency in their different editions. Game control is different every time! Take a look at the FPS (first-person shooting games) world, now even different games have almost the same controls. I just don't understand why for the same game, the control has to be changed every time!!! Secondly, a later edition might throw away all the features of previous editions, whether good or bad! Take a look at this simple example. Before fifa 2001, if a player was hit very hard by a ball in the close range, he would behave as if nothing had happened. Of course this is ridiculous and computer opponent could utilize this "feature" to score like hell. Fortunately in fifa 2001, they corrected it. But now in fifa 2002, it's back to before again! Hellooo, is this game developed by two different sets of people or what?!

I don't play other sport games created by EA sport, so I don't know how they do in those sports. But as far as soccer is concerned, they'd better quit and leave the game development to some better developers. I just can't stand them any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars FIFA 2002, June 18, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: FIFA Soccer 2002 (CD-ROM)
I have been playing FIFA soccer titles since the 1997 edition. This is by far the best. It is also the toughest to play. I don't mean the controls are difficult or that the game is unresponsive. I mean the AI is superior and the ball goes where you aim. Getting the ball in the general vicinity is not going to cut it. A player from your team in the general area of a pass is not going to get the benefit of the doubt, giving him an edge getting to the ball. The upside is the rush when you make a beautiful through pass and know it was your skill not a generous program that made the pass. I have been playing FIFA soccer through so many incarnations that I usually start the game at professional level and soon advance to world class. Not with this one. It is a very challenging game and one I am not going to get bored with anytime soon.
I also have World Cup 2002. No need to buy that game. You get the World Cup mode in this FIFA 2002 plus the options of playing leagues and tournaments including creating your own tournaments. The only thing you can do in World Cup 2002 is play the World Cup and friendlies. I think FIFA 2002 is a bit more challenging anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to the Golden Days, October 1, 2002
This review is from: FIFA Soccer 2002 (CD-ROM)
After two years of poor games EA Sports came up with the best soccer simulation ever. Both FIFA 2000 and 2001 were overwhelmed by Konami's ISS but this year they made sure to beat all opposition.

I think that in order to rate such a game, one needs to assess three main things, being graphics, gameplay and AI. Regarding graphics it is renowned that EA were unbeatable and in fact graphical detail is quite impressive. With a good video card, you will enjoy swift movements, shadow effects, crowd details and much more.

If excellent graphics are not surprising, great improvement was made to both gameplay and AI. You can play in 16 different official leagues, use loads of national teams and participate in several competitions. In addition to that you can edit every aspect of your players, including the type of boots they will wear. In-game moves are excellent. There are 8 types of special moves and moreover you get to control the speed and accuracy of passing and shooting, with the help of spins.

Finally there is the AI. In previous editions of the game you could easily play at world class level after a few days. There were "special ways" to score a goal and so on. In FIFA 2002 world class is very difficult. In order to score you must make everything to perfection, and the computer plays to maximum ability. This makes the game very difficult and challenging.

Another thing to note is that many pathes to the game can be found online. These patches give you new personalised teams, new kits and also new referees. On the whole this is a game to buy, which will give you hours and hours of fun and challinging gameplay.

With no doubt the best fifa game is fifa 99 which is fast and fun. If you are looking for a more complicated game this is the one for you because it's easy to plan complicated passes and stuff here. It's a very fun game and yet it fails to meet the standerts of fifa 99
