5.0 out of 5 stars I could play this all night
It doesn't matter what other people say, if you enjoy soccer in real life you will definetly enjoy this. This is the closest soccer gets on a video game to real life. Yes there is a limited number of teams but the gameplay is awesome. the graphics are alot more crisp in Fifa World Cup than in Fifa 2002. There aren't too many flaws, only the framerate gets a little...

They should just call this game what it is - an advirtisement for the 2002 World Cup. The gameplay options are very limited, there are no statistics kept on goals, bookings, etc. at least that i can see, and why the hell does the game go into slow motion so often? Also Amazons description of this title is misleading. There are no club teams and only 40 internationals plus...

Really apart from some beautifully detailed stadiums this just is not worth the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars World Cup 2002 , better than FIFA 2002?, August 15, 2002

This review is from: FIFA World Cup 2002 (Video Game)
No, is the answer to that question. I feel that compared to FIFA 2002, the gameplay is very poor, and there is far too much color in. The graphics seem to be an improvement, but the game on the whole doesnt seem to live up to the FIFA standard. I would advise a potential buyer of a football game to veer towards the non world cup range, as this reduces the whole game-playing enjoyment and addictivness factor, because in FIFA 2002 you can buy and sell players, control the players fully, (on World Cup 2002 the players had a habit of passing on their own accord) you can win leagues, trophies, and play in many amazing stadiums, were the color level is just right i feel. Speaking as a 15 year old game-a-holic, i feel that one buying a football game at the moment should be advised to wait for the release of FIFA 2003, or if you need a good football game now, buy FIFA 2002. I hope this review has been helpful. Hitman.

EA Sport's FIFA WC 2002, undoubtedly, will suffice if not please soccer (futbol) fans this Summer. The graphics are deep and the game is extremely challenging (on professional and world class modes), providing an exciting gaming experience.

The drawback (for those of you familiar with PS2's FIFA WC), is that the game doesn't include MLS, English Premier, and other world class soccer league modes! I was disappointed after purchasing the game that these game play modes were suddenly excluded! Thus, leaving the WC as your only playing option. PS2 allowed you to pick any country in the world, and go through a series of qualifying matches to even make it INTO the WC. The Xbox simply starts with the 32 tournament teams and off you go...

I must admit, however, the tournament on Xbox is absolutely superb, and with that, Xbox has given us enough. The WC competition is phenomenal, and will surely provide hours of intense fun.

Fifa 2002 was a great leap for a soccer game since Fifa 98, but the World Cup 2002 hits a new all time low. I thought that it was going to be the same as Fifa 2002 except with the world cup included and maybe better graphics but I almost threw the game in the trash after i played it for the first time. First of all, and most important, there is significant slow down in the game especially when you pass midfield. The camera stutters and it makes the game very difficult to follow. Second, you can only play with teams that have qualified to the world cup, if your national team didn't make it well tough luck. One of the main reasons people buy this game is to play with their national team and clasify them to the world cup, but now you can't even pretend that your national team is any good. Third, the people at EA added some special effects when you strike the ball it looks and feels like your playing NFL Blitz but for soccer, not very realistic! I cant even begin to comprehend how they let this game come out the way it is. With problems like slow down make the game simply unplayable. I so mad they did such a poor job with this game I really do hope they fire some people at EA. Trust people, stick to Fifa 2002, its true there is no world cup but at least you wont have a seizures while playing World Cup 2002.

I'm usually not into sports games, but I found this one to be pretty fun. It's not too difficult to learn how to play, and eventually you can master the moves and really whoop up on the other teams. The graphics are pretty good, although they're far from pushing the PS2's graphical capabilities.

There is another EA soccer game for the PS2 that probably would be a better bet, but it is difficult to find and this game is still fun nonetheless. If you like soccer and own a PS2, get this. If you don't follow the sport much, then you can skip this or just rent it somewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars makes you work, but all in all a definite keeper, June 16, 2002
This review is from: FIFA World Cup 2002 (Video Game)
i'm pretty stubborn and always set games on the hardest difficulty before i play. for this one, like most sports games, that's a mistake at first. it took me a week of nonstop playing before i finally won the cup with france, the highest rated team in the game. the only other team that i can see having a shot at winning the cup with on the 'world class' difficulty level is argentina, who the game ranked 2nd. i couldnt even win with brazil who is ranked 3rd. nevertheless, this is a very enjoyable game with smooth playability, and i turned off the playstation last nite and a world cup game was on the tv and i almost couldnt tell the two apart. but like most sports game, world cup '02 is best enjoyed on the 2nd hardest difficulty- any easier and you'll crush the computer, any harder and you better be ready to spend a week on the couch with bloodshot eyes like i did wondering how the computer just made that last shot from outside the goalie box with your defender on his back. i gave this game 5 stars because its the most enjoyable soccer game I'VE played lately- now i'm not the biggest soccer fan but i know the cup comes along once every 4 yrs and that's worth something. and they do have around 30 real players from 41 teams in this game. my advice, put this game on the 'professional' difficuly level, so you can pick the country you want and still have a shot at winning. enjoy the intros, the custom roster possibilities, and the many in game moves and defensive maneuvers that will hook you in so deep that you'll feel like the coach yelling instructions from the sideline using your controller

1.0 out of 5 stars 2002 FIFA World Cup., June 3, 2002

This game is the worst soccer game out there. There is only two modes, friendly and world cup. There is only 32 international teams or so. There is no HOLLAND, ROMANIA just to mention a few. There is how ever Iceland, Scotland. Two joke teams that did not qualify. No creation center, player-team editor!!!!.This title is a total waste of time and money avoid at all costs!!!!!. Stick to FIFA 2002. Also gameplay is horrid, major slow down....it just feels lame. Finally ignore any favourable reviews you see, these people do not know what they are talking about!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game ... RENT, DON'T BUY!!!, June 29, 2002

Don't get me wrong, graphically and playability-wise, this game is the best soccer game to come out for the PS2. The graphics have vastly improved since FIFA 2002, and even that had great graphics at the time. Playbility has made it harder for human players to singlehandedly mow down the computer in World Class difficulty mode; every pass, shot, and lob has to be carefully measured before striking. Graphically the game is also astounding. Every single World Cup stadium has been tremendously rendered, with striking colors and player sculpting, right down to Zidane's bald spot.

HOWEVER, this game is far too single minded to buy. Since this game focuses solely on the World Cup and the teams invovled, it becomes far too easy to get sick of the game. Without the club team-style format of FIFA, this game gets sick very quick. Which isn't to disregard its other achievements, but its simply not worth the money. Hopefully, EA will keep these changes and implement them in FIFA 2003, which I'm sure will be worth buying. So rent for a few days and get your World Cup fill!

3.0 out of 5 stars Few improvements since Fifa 1998, June 19, 2002

This game is fun, but it has some shortcomings on realism. You can save player lineup changes, but can't adjust player stats. This means a mis-rated team like Senegal (ranked last in the game) or France (ranked 1) can't be changed. And a great goalie like Friedal will be playing like a third tier goalie.

Unlike the last 1998 Fifa WC game, they removed weather from the game--and if you watch the world cup you'll see it's the monsoon season in Japan and Korea--half the games have rain!

Fatigue is a nonfactor. You don't need to use subs except to protect your carded players or the rare injury.

AI is not very good. Long balls rule the game, and defense is very slow to get back to defend. Would be nice to see defense actually be an option. You can also just juggle the ball or move vertically across the field and the other team will not challenge you--you can do this for 90 minutes if you want.

Music is so-so. It's a real orchestra, but it's obvious they spent a lot of time on conducting the orchestra instead of improving the game. I would've preferred some nice dancey-songs (Tubthumper and Fluke were the music of WC 1998). They also took out playing the national anthems before the matches. Some other sound effects do not sound like the game. The drumming ever-present in African matches, instead they have someone squeaking a squeeze toy. A match in Korea against a Korean team, and it doesn't sound like you're up against the home team. The commentators even said the crowd was having a great time when Italy was up 3-1.

The announcers--after all this time, can't they do a better play-by-play? Why can't they say, "Batitusta-shoots. Korea picks it up now" instead of the pronouns they use, "He has got a good shot now."

All in all, little progress from Fifa World Cup 1998--which is like a generation ago in game years.
