This book, Fillies and Females is the third book I've read, written by Bev Pettersen. As I read through the novels in her appealing `track' series, I found that with each new book my favourite changed. And while reading, I loved them all. First it was Jockeys and Jewels, then Color My Horse, and now this marvel. Bev's writing style with its snappy dialogue and appealing characters keeps grabbing my heart to ensure a connection grows there, that my time as a reader has been spent well and is satisfying. Like a retreat.
Now I'm feeling bereft, as if I've become addicted to horses and race tracks - though I have never set foot on either. Becky and Dino move through an appealing story that addresses the danger we face when we allow the `quick fixes' or desire for `monetary gains' to control our lives. It reminds us we must listen to our hearts. Heed out own wisdom.
Bev's characters always are empowered to remain who they are, at the core, and by being themselves, to set things right. In this novel, by doing the right things, Becky and Dino both win. Becky finds a real home and her wildest dreams become reality. Her world and the larger world become better places. And Dino sheds his anger and stops dreaming of a return to the past. Only then can he recognize and accept what he has, and live a new and more fulfilling dream, with Becky. I loved Fillies and Females and can hardly wait to see what Bev Pettersen releases next.

This novel has interesting, well-drawn characters placed in a vivid contemporary ranch/horse racing setting. As a reader, having been drawn into the story, I was then bombarded with far too much gratuitous, sensual activity, not in keeping with a shy heroine afraid even to be noticed. After a few drinks and a makeover, this deeply repressed prude was in heat for her cowboy-hero!
Fillies and Females is an example of a 'formula' romance written to the publisher's guidelines, which ruins the building of narrative and plot. I deleted it from my device before I found out what terrible event in the heroine's past so frightened her of men and her own feelings. She was so skitzo,I was worn out- so disappointed, I didn't care. Cheap.

Becky was a very caring nurse. She worked in home health care taking care of Martha who owned a race horse ranch. Martha had had a heart attack and needed full time care with little or no turmoil and/or upset. When even going to the race track became too much for her, Martha delegated Becky to take her place, represent her and keep her filled in on how things were going.
Becky was forced to deal with Dino, the trainer, almost daily. An attraction grew between them, helped along by Martha. Becky had been in foster care most of her life and had a bad experience with her last foster home. She wore dowdy clothes and kept her body covered. A quiet little mouse. She recoiled in fear at the touch of a man.Things started happening, bum legs on the horses, horses too tired to race, sabotage, and positive drug tests on one horse. All this time, the nephew kept trying to get Martha to let him sell everything, lock stock and barrel and put her in a nice care facility. But Becky had overheard and seen things that were pointing at Slim, the manager.
Dino needed the wins from the races to buy back the ranch that he lost in his divorce from his wife. Nothing was going right. Did he give the drugs to the horse to get that final win he needed to get his money?
This was a good story from beginning to end. Kept you guessing with all the little side roads it traveled. I enjoyed it and would recommend it. A good mystery Romance.

From the opening line of Bev Pettersen's new novel Fillies and Females I was hooked. I feel in love with Martha, the senior citizen who knows how to play up her aging to get her way, and Becky her nurse who is forced to go to the track to keep an eye on Martha's horses. And when Becky has to interact with sexy horse trainer, Dino, I totally sympathized with her. Dino's sense of loyalty to Martha's departed husband made me immediately like this smooth talker who has his own goals and passions in life. Becky's harsh childhood make her interactions with men awkward but I loved how Pettersen developed her and Dino's relationship--it was real, friendly and loving. And honestly know one writes about horses like the way Pettersen does. When one of the horses got loose I felt I couldn't breathe, and all those track scenes, the jostling of the horses in the starter gates--you just know Pettersen spent lots of time with race horses. This was like reading romance and mystery all tied together with horses also as characters. I honestly couldn't put this book down and the paced kept picking up until I was the one who felt like I'd been in a horse race. This book is a page turner!

I almost never don't finish a book I have started. Couldn't finish this one.
I'm pretty sure the author knows a horse from a cow, but that seems to be where her expertise stops.
She seemed unaware that there are obvious differences between a male and female horse that most people are aware of. Her heroine was able to tell the male horse and female horse had been swapped because of the different way the two horses ate their carrots.....which no one else had noticed.
Of course the plot hinged on being able to swap horses at the race track.....where no one will notice the sex change of the listed entry.
That's where I quit.
