This is one of the best modern day fairy tales I have ever read! Ulrich Von Strudel was born without knees. But Ulrich has 'tude', he tries to always look on the bright side. He meets a monster in his closet, deals with the evil Mrs. Lipstick. Beware giggles will be a by product of reading this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fairytale For Today's Children June 15, 2012
By Becky
Format:Kindle Edition
Fing: A Modern Fairytale is patterned after classic fairytales. Told in a traditional storyteller voice, this story is about a likable boy with grit, determination, and heart. There's age-old evil he must overcome, and help from the most unexpected source. In the end there's a clear life lesson that's woven into the fabric of the story and makes it a keeper to be read from one generation to the next.

Did I mention that it's highly entertaining? There are light moments and a few nail-biters. Definitely a good read-aloud book which adults can enjoy too.

Highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars "awful terrible day" November 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Yes, poor Ulrich is not having a great day.

I downloaded this ebook when it was offered as a Kindle freebie. The illustrations are very well done. I encourage Papa G. to continue to work with this artist and include even more in his next release.

The story is a dark one - along the tone of Lemony Snicket. Nothing very cheerful seems to happen in this tale. Sensitive readers may not like it.

I did like the action, the cute but beasty Fing, and the vivid descriptions of the setting - all so very well done. Readers will want to cheer for Fing and Ulrich. The writing will keep them reading until the end.

A cute and cuddly plush toy would be fantastic! I want a stuffed Fing toy for my shelf. I think young readers would too.

5.0 out of 5 stars STRENGTH IN ATTITUDE September 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Even when it seems the whole world is against you, if you can believe in yourself, if you can find a friend (even if you have to invent one) you have a greater chance to prevail.
Ulrich already had two strikes against him, two perfectly straight legs that were each missing a knee. Just imagine trying to sit down at the movies or a restaurant.
But Ulrich has a secret weapon, his mom, who has spoken words of encouragement and affirmation every time she's near his ear.(Take a hint: every child needs their own personal cheerleader.)
Ulrich's life and attitude take a nose dive when his parents are missing and presumed dead in cannibal country. The only relative to assume control of their money, property and son is a bit greedy and a whole lot sadistic. She begins plotting Ulrich's death within the first day.
Poor Ulrich can't even talk to the many adults he trusts at his boarding school because he's been sent home for Christmas break. He's been banished to the attic bedroom; imagine climbing those stairs with no knees, and told he can have only one meal a day-at 10 a.m.
Ulrich's only hope is the monster he's discovered in his closet. But just whose side is the monster on?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fairytale August 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Amazing book. I thought it was fun that a monster could help a kid during a family crisis. It was sad that the kids parents had died and he was stuck with his mean Aunt. I think the monster was the best part of the book.
I loved the ending.
