GUICK AND EASY SHELTER,
By
This review is from: FINLEY PRODUCTS Easy-Up Enclosure Kit (Lawn & Patio)
I recently built an EASY UP to store my lawn tractor behind my garage. The directions were simple to follow and I liked not having to cut any angles. Project was completed in less than two hours. Used treated lumber and coated wood screws. Covered the entire structure with a used billboard cover made of poly coated canvas - plain white side out - purchased for $20.00 I think this thing will last for years.I rated it four stars because I think they could have made the hardware a little stronger.

Very easy to install over my 2x4 basics frame. It took me about a half a day to put the whole frame together and to get the cover over the frame. I didn't have a very level place to build the frame and would suggest building it on an area already leveled. Two of us were able to move the whole thing into it's permanent spot after I built it. I am going to use the structure to keep some of my plants in over the winter and to start some plants early next spring. We have had two wind storms blow thru the Seattle area and the enclosure held up well. My fence needs some more reenforcement but the enclosure stood up to the weather. I like that there are zippered doors with tie backs on both ends of the enclosure.FEB 2010 UPDATE: Added a set of shelves and just bought four heated pads to keep the seed beds warm at night. The vegetable seeds should start popping up the first part of March. This was a great purchase, I am still very pleased with the system. The potted plants that I stored in the cold frame over winter faired really well and I didn't have to try to store them in the garage like I use to do.

I bought this kit to put together in my basement to provide an enclosure for my growing orchid collection. It was easy for me to put up by myself, if a little awkward in places. I did not buy the custom cover, but used several rolls of window insulation plastic (which came out almost as expensive anyway!).I did have an issue with some screw holes not being present in a few of the plastic parts as indicated in the plans, but these were parts that hold together just fine under their own weight. I did not use any side bracing that is optional with the plans as it is in a basement. However if you wanted this to be outside, you'd definitely need the extra bracing to ensure it stayed standing under winds.

I bought this about 2 summers ago. Used it as the frame and covered it in clear, corregated plastic roofing. Made a removable window on each end for venting on hot days, a door, and lights. Started many outdoor plants in it, and followed with the peppers and other things that like to stay out of the rain. Home grown veggies filling our chest freezer for the second year in a row. I have two outside raised beds (12X5) that I move the seedlings out into, also a few deck pots. Feeds a family of four. Not too shabby.

'Optional' Bracing Not Optional,

This review is from: FINLEY PRODUCTS Easy-Up Enclosure Kit (Lawn & Patio)
The instructions say that installing 1 X 2s to make the structure more permanent and stable is optional, but it's really not. Without the extra bracing, the structure has the stability of jello. So add to your shopping list seven 1 X 2s. As another reviewer said, you also need to screw holes in the bottom connectors attached to the 2 X 4s so that you can secure the 2 x 2s into them, but that's no big deal. I was able to construct this kit and install the Easy-Up cover by myself in less than three hours, but it would have been even easier and quicker as a two-man job.

I love this greenhouse kit. I will probably buy another one. I bought the treated lumber at Lowes for about $65.00. The directions are easy to follow. The "optional" structural supports are not optional, they are mandatory. This is a nice sturdy greenhouse that took about 2-3 hours to cut the pieces and assemble. The clear cover fits it great and is easy to install on it. Including the kit, the lumber, and the cover I only have about $165.00 invested in a nice greenhouse.

Worthless! Avoid at all cost! Warning: cheap flimsy plastics! Wrong instructions!,

This kit first sounds promising, and cheap of course. When I received it I know I made a mistake. The brackets are made of cheap plastics which cracks easily. You think you will get a few galvanized steel brackets when you spend $30+ but no, you only get those cheap plastic brackets which probably worth only about 3 to 4 dollars. The illustration is thorough, however if you follow it you will be mislead. I found it out too late! The instruction says you put together the roof part then the base, then all you have to do is to fit the roof over the base. sounds easy? It's mission impossible if you only have one or 2 people, because the roof is rather heavy, you need at least one person to hold it in place. Then another person to align the side posts (8 of them in total, please look at the picture) into the roof brackets. Remember, you need to fit all 8 in or it's no good. That takes about forever because the side post will be very difficult to align. So, you should NEVER follow the instruction! What you need to do, as I later figured out, is to assemble the roof at the last step! This way it's much easier to align and the beam is much lighter than the whole roof. Too late! The cheapo plastic brackets already bent and broke. I'm returning these junk to the seller. If they come out with the steel brackets I'll reconsider.

I had immediate problems with this product. I set it up in early spring and the plastic connectors became very brittle in the cold. All of the connectors snapped within a day leaving me with a pile of wood supports. The product may work better in warmer climates, but this product should not be used in areas where freezing temps are possible.

I was disappointed to find out that the kit is made up of plastic instead of metal. But with the reviews that said it was a good product I decided to take a chance anyway. It wasn't that much money. It is advertised as a 2 x 4 basic easy up enclosure kit, however the wood you use for it is 2 x 2's which are very flimsy. It took three people 4 hours to put the enclosure up. During that time there was much cussing because the brackets kept cracking. It did come up though and even with the "optional" wood pieces for extra bracing it was still wobbly. How someone can nail sides to this thing and make it a building I don't know. I went out the next day to check on my new enclosure. It had fallen completely over and many of the brackets had broken. Total waste of money. :-( |
