My 7th AFI purchase. A nice hardcore sound mixed w/darkness,

Well, let's see...I'm an AFI fan, a Cure fan, and a Misfits fan...I'll bet you have NO idea what I think of this EP...In case you don't get my somewhat odd sense of humor, I absolutely LOVED this! It was totally worth the [price], even if it is only about 9 and a half minutes long. "3 1/2" and "Over Exposure" are easily two of AFI's best songs ever. "The Hanging Garden" is a cover of one of my FAVORITE Cure songs, and "Demonomania" is an awesome, 45-second Misfits cover that just gets blown through your ears at 1,000 mph. On this EP, you can start to see AFI leaving their punk roots and getting into their much darker approach to music. Most people say that Black Sails in the Sunset was AFI's turning point and when they adopted their darker or "gothic" (a false label that annoys every one of the band members) image, but does it really get any darker or more "gothic" than a Cure cover? I really wish there was a full-length album of material like this. It's sound is a mix between the pure hardcore of "Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes" and the darkness of "Black Sails in the Sunset". If you're an AFI fan, I give this EP my highest recommendation, but if you're new to AFI, pick up the All Hallows EP first. It gives you a great intro to one of the best bands of the past 10 years.

This is quite easily the heaviest AFI release. There's only 4 songs, 2 of which are covers, but hell it's still a damn good offering for anyone who's pissed off a lot, or just likes AFI.
Opener "3 1/2" has a bone-crushingly heavy riff, a tight as hell structure and great lyrics. It may not have the catchiest chorus in the AFI canon but it's a great song, one of my favourites by them. "Overexposure" is in turn pretty heavy, altogether not so captivating as the first track but the lyrics are still great. The ending is slower and more melodic, sung rather than screamed. "The Hanging Garden" is an interesting choice of a cover, good bass playing on this track in particular (it's the first release they did with Hunter as a permanent member of the band, although at the time he was calling himself "Steve Angel"). Remember kids, heaviness isn't just about distortion, it's also about delivery, and in terms of sheer weight of gloom this track is REALLY heavy. "Demonomania" is a Misfits song. As a BIG fan of Earth AD I've heard the original quite a lot and although Davey's singing isn't quite as impressive as Glenn's here, I think they did it pretty well, although I would have liked them to do "We Bite". All in all it's a solid release, don't expect satisfying vocal harmonies, but if you feel like being slapped around the face for about 15 minutes and there's nobody else around, put this on.

This is one of the best AFI releases (along with Very Proud of Ya', Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow). It is much more original than the All Hallows ep. I also like Davey's screaming better on this release better than on the next two (Black Sails, All Hallows). I'll rate the songs individually.
31/2: 10/10 This song is such a heavy introduction to the ep! It has very good lyrics, and it's a very creative song. The chorus has a really cool sound to it, and an awsome rythem! Overexposure: 10/10 I love this song! It's just as intense as the last one! This song has a really cool rythem change after the second chorus. It makes the song sound alot darker and angrier. I love Davey's vocals at the end. The Hanging Garden (Cure cover):10/10 Awsome song! Even though I love the original song, this version is way more fun to listen to! The drums are heavier, and they do cool stuff with the guitars on it. Demonomania (Misfits cover):10/10 This is such a hyper song! Even though the original version had much better vocals, I think this one is way more intense (AFI always makes such energetic cover-songs). You should definately get this release. It's much more raw and creative than the All Hallows ep! Get as many releases as you can from AFI (exept the Best of the Nitro days album).

AFI started growing up around this time, and SYMAOYE. They started to realize that they had more to say than just the standard punk fare (which is still good, but it does get tiring after a while). I prefer substance in the lyrics of what I'm listening to, and AFI is about as good as it gets. They are one of the BEST bands out there, and although a lot of their older "hardcore" fans are dropping like flies, I am here for the duration. Each and every album they release is a classic in it's own right, for it's own reason. This one is no exception.

If you aren't a fan of A Fire Inside a.k.a. AFI, you should purchase this album. Not only do they cover The Misfits but they have their own East Bay style. I've seen the band play twice and I have listened to their music for the past 3 years. I must admit they have changed. They are much deeper and darker. However, their first two albums Answer That and Stay Fashionable and Very Proud of Ya are excellent if you want something loud and fast. I love it all and the guys of the band are great guys to sit and talk to before or after the shows. email me:dipsas@hotmail.com

Burning Strong,

This disc is phenominal. Four tracks of pure hardcore. This was released just after "Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes", so it's mostly that good old hardcore AFI with just a hint of the more goth-core style they've begun to adopt lyrically. 3 1/2 is simply blistering (and a valiant addition to Davey Havok's roster of songs which include "three" in the title). It really let's you know where you stand, with it's crunching guitars, unrelenting percussion, and tortured screams. This transitions almost seemlessly into Overexposure, another harsh track that really displays this band's musical versatility. You can really see the direction the lyrics are beginning to go in. Next up, The Hanging Garden, a cover of my favorite Cure song. This is friggin' awesome, the perfect oasis of sinister futility in an album filled with bullet-speed anthems of rage and abandonment. The album closes with the there-and-gone Misfits cover, Demonomania, which closes the album on quite the odd note, since it's vicious speed and growling vocals barely leave you time to reflect on the fact that you are actually listening to a song before it's gone. My only complaint about this E.P.? I didn't buy it sooner. Cheers!

This is a great EP with 2 originals and 2 covers. AFI covers: The Cure's song "In the Hanging Garden" which is one of the best Cure songs ever. They also cover Demonomania by the classic Misfits. Deffinately pick up this CD if you're into AFI, or want to be exposed to their music. (the first track on this CD: "3 1/2" is one of my favorite AFI songs.)

The reason this EP got only 4 Stars is cuz there were only 4 songs and it is only 9 minutes and 36 seconds long. But that's alright. This is the most harcore 9:36 I have lived.

AFI, What a band. This EP is well worth any money. The first 2 tracks are original AFI, fast, loud and energetic and also only available on this disc. Track 3 is a cover of The Cure's "The Hanging Garden". While for the forth, Davey Havock Pays respect to his hero 'Glenn Danzig', with Demonomania, origialy recorded by The Misfits. Simply put, Just buy it!

i am a huge afi fan and i think this ep is as good as if not better than the all hallow's ep.
3 1/2-10/10 this song starts out like it could be a metal song but jumps into a hardcore punk song that is one of my favorite afi songs ever Overexposure- 9/10 a really awesome hardcore song. The Hanging Garden- 10/10 an awesome cure song that is even better with an afi twist. Demonomania- 9/10 46 seconds of rocked out hardcore that will get stuck in your head and make you want to headbang. |
