3.0 out of 5 stars fireplace screen, April 1, 2009
This review is from: BLK FIREPLACE SCREEN (Do it Best Imports DF61237) (Misc.)
The screen was delivered much more quickly than expected...which is always nice. Unfortunately, I paid too much attention to the review with the picture of the almost black screen. That is what I was expecting, a black screen, this one was perfect to the description and has a stainless steel appearance. The screen is in our kitchen so luckily the color still works. I did find that not all of the predrilled holes are placed exactly the same from one side to the other giving the handles a slightly misshapen look. meh. And, due to the build of our firplace (it slopes slightly on the hearth) the screen does not fit flush to the wall. We will probably add hardware to fix that. It will be difficult to find matching tools for this screen. Suggestions are welcomed. Nicer than previous Target screens but I don't know if it is worth [...] bucks (w/ shipping) :/

I was trying to replace the garish 1970's brass fireplace screen in my house with something a little more modern. I'm also on a budget so I was looking for a good price point. I ran across this screen, liked it, but couldn't find any other pictures of it. Once I received it I posted one. In the picture it looked silver, in the description it says black. I took a chance and it's perfect. The box states it as being "gunmetal gray". It's one shade lighter than black. Unless you point it out no one will notice it isn't wrought iron black. For the price it can't be beat.
It's quick (10 minutes) and easy to assemble. Taking only a wrench/pliers and a screw driver. The only complaint I have is all the parts were loose and rolling around in the box. All were present, but a little hard to round up (minus one star). I'm thinking maybe the one I received was sent out before and returned?
It was exactly what I wanted and I'm very happy with my purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, And All You Should Need...., September 29, 2009
This review is from: BLK FIREPLACE SCREEN (Do it Best Imports DF61237) (Misc.)
As a homeowner with two fireplaces, I know full well how greatly overpriced many screens and glass doors for them can be. You would think for what some manufacturers ask they must have uranium deposits in the metal somewhere. I imagine that part of the reason they tend to treat fireplace screens and doors as something only royalty can afford is once we get around to buying one we tend to keep it for a generation or more. Lets face it, with most fireplaces we have to have something to protect the floor and room from flying sparks, and we also tend to keep whatever contraption is already there until it is ready to run off to the dump on its own. So buying new ones usually comes down to a once every 20 or 30 year experience. No wonder most manufacturers tend to stick us for as much as they can when the time comes we are finally in the market for one. The other thing that has always set me to pondering "what were they thinkin" when it comes to fireplace screens is why so many of them don't have doors. Unless you're a couple or family that has one of those god awful fake fireplaces they put candles and pillows in, doors or screens seem to me to be as essential a fireplace component as a set of tools. Having to push a fancy screen out of the way every time to get at the flames for stokin' is as much a pain as it sounds in describing it. Yet the vast majority of screens here on Amazon or just about anywhere don't have any doors or other opening. Trust me, if you are new on the scene as to owning a fireplace and plan on actually using it, don't buy one of those newfangled fancy screens that are too fashionably minded to be truly useful. You will end up half the time keeping it folded and put aside while tending the fire, and just may end up ruining your whole evening by burning your house down. This Do-it-Best screen is just about as reasonably priced as they come. Cheaper ones can be found at some Home Depots and such, but their rare. (I saw this particular one at a Lowe's and bought it there). Its solid enough that it feels like it will last as long as any other comparably priced model, and it by all means it has doors. None of these type screens feel all that heavy and rock solid, so don't waste your time trying to find one that is. This screen with the built in feet on the front is designed to be just pushed up against the fireplace, so installation can be as simple as that. But you can also screw it in permanently to the wall of your fireplace from the upper corners, which is what I would recommend. Despite the fact you can get by with this screen just sitting freely, drilling it in makes it a lot more solid. It tends to lean forward and leave a gap at the top if you just let it stand free, plus it will wiggle and chatter when the doors are operated if not secured. The only down side to this model that I noted is the brushed stainless steel finish it carries, rather than a traditional black. Its not ugly by any means, but I feel the stainless steel look on a low priced screen is attempting to limit its preference to those that would consider colored lights on their house at Christmastime to be unthinkable. (You know.....Snobs). Although this is still a handsome screen in the stainless steel finish, I feel the plain old traditional black would have looked much nicer. (The black version is available on Amazon on and off. Do a search and check it out). Overall, this is one of the best and most reasonably priced screens I have come across that actually is functional. For most of us, it should be all one would ever need to sit in front of the fire with and toast marshmallows...Recommended.
