4.0 out of 5 stars OK for a comprehensive review
Since there are not many comprehensive NBDE Part 1 review books out there, this book is good for providing an outline on what to study. You definitely need to look up more information to fully learn the material, as some subjects are only touched on, and some information is left out. There are some annoying things: a good amount of typos, and the writers tend to use...

1.0 out of 5 stars Book is full of errors, August 1, 2009
This review is from: FIRST AID FOR THE NBDE PART 1 2/E (First Aid Series) (Pt. 1) (Paperback)
This book (2nd ed.) is generally a good overview of topics you should know for part 1. But it has many errors which make me question the validity of the material presented (are there more errors that I'm not catching?)

There are numerous typos including "adduction" instead of "abduction;" page 88 shows a figure of a heart with transposition of the great vessels; however the figure is presented as a normal heart.

page 173 says the outer cortex of lymph nodes have germinal nodes containing T cells. this is wrong.

The germinal follicles actually contain proliferating B cells; T cells are found scattered in the deep cortical zone (paracortex)

on page 174 it says FSH stimulates lactogenesis (milk production), this is not true; milk production is stimulated by prolactin.

definitely read some "real" books before you pick up this one. I hope they fix these glitches in the 3rd ed.

You definitely need to look up more information to fully learn the material, as some subjects are only touched on, and some information is left out. There are some annoying things: a good amount of typos, and the writers tend to use their own acronyms without explaining what they are. It's almost like you're reading someone's notes from class that made sense to the person who took the notes, but not to you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for a light review, July 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: FIRST AID FOR THE NBDE PART 1 2/E (First Aid Series) (Pt. 1) (Paperback)
I felt this book was good for a review of the basics, but didn't go into the depth we really needed. After studying from First Aid for a week, I took several released board exams and realized that First Aid didn't have the detail needed to do well on the test. Also, this book is full of errors, which can be a distraction. I felt that Dental Decks were better for studying (although there are a lot of errors in them as well). I would recommend this book if you feel that your foundation isn't very strong. If you did well in your basic science classes, you can probably skip this book and move onto something more detailed, which will better prepare you for the test.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its just what you need for NBDE....:), February 15, 2009

This review is from: FIRST AID FOR THE NBDE PART 1 2/E (First Aid Series) (Pt. 1) (Paperback)
The book is excellent based on its content and has up to the point topic discussions which helps last min. reviews plus the margins of what is to be studied according to what is important for dental students. Excellent shipping with three days delivery. I feel the price could have been slightly less but over all its like having you "piece of cake" for NBDE-1 test takers.I am totally satisfied reading from this book.
Thank you amazon for your business.

This book is a nice run through prior to boards although I would not lean on it as a comprehensive study guide. If you are looking to pass, this is great. If you want the 90's, you can still use this, but don't let it be your only source.

The Book is really good for reviewing material throughout the year, not complete though but no book is going to be complete for the boards. Still some typo errors that need to be fixed.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's now P/NP, so this is almost all you need, June 23, 2011

I'm part of the unfortunate bunch that will be the last to take this amazingly stupid exam for a score. This book is an excellent supplement to the Dental Decks. It covers most topics in sufficient detail, many in too much detail. Despite having forewarning, I found no particularly good source for the TMJ and TMD which was rather plentiful on my exam.

If taking this test P/NP I couldn't imagine anyone needing more than the Decks + this book. A one two knock out to pass for sure. (this is all given that they're not going to be increasing the difficulty. There is no indication that they will be, nor do I feel it's necessary for them to)

1.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors for a book written by a periodontist and oral surgeon, May 7, 2011
This review is from: FIRST AID FOR THE NBDE PART 1 2/E (First Aid Series) (Pt. 1) (Paperback)
Too many errors. Too few useful mnemonics. Some of the lists are poorly organized. Many of the tables are confusing and could be better represented. The info can be disjointed just to make room for pictures and charts. You shouldn't have to piece together or re-arrange the information yourself; otherwise, why buy this book?

How do two accomplished dentists get together and make mistakes on head and neck anatomy, and then create a pneumonic out of it? The branches of the external carotid artery are what I'm referring to. Mixing up the order of the branches, where they go, and then making a mnemonic SALFOPSM out of it is ridiculous. I hope they try to patent that one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time with this, August 11, 2010
This review is from: FIRST AID FOR THE NBDE PART 1 2/E (First Aid Series) (Pt. 1) (Paperback)
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

I started to use this book as a review for my NBDE part 1. One of the only good aspects of this book is the charts in the microbio section. Also, it has a very detailed index so it made looking up a topic easy.

Other than that, there are glaring errors in this book. It's incredibly hard to follow. The pictures in it are useless. You'll just end up looking at an atlas anyways. It's missing a lot of critical information that I think is important to know for part one.

Everyone in my dental class had the exact same opinion of this book. We all thought we wasted our money!

Honestly, I ended up getting Board Busters for NBDE part 1. It was so much better. More organized, well written, concise, and not as many errors (there are a few which is given with any source). Not many people know about it because it's a new source. But definitely worth buying over First Aid and Decks!!!
