Book Description

Do you ever wonder where the line is between dark and light? Do you believe the brightest light can be pulled into the depths of darkness? Do you believe that the blackest soul can find their way into the light?

It took Detective Paul Sutton exactly eleven days to know that retirement wasn’t going to work out for him. Eleven days to know that he could not put this last case, the only case of his career that he was unable to solve, down. Watching it grow cold and forgotten by everyone except himself and the deceased’s husband, Sutton fought hard against the urge to work it on his own. He thought he could let it go, but he was wrong, dead wrong. Now, back on the job as a Cold Case Detective, Sutton is given another chance to solve the case that has tormented him for almost two years.

Kali Hanson is dealing with her own special type of torment as she attempts to navigate a tangled web of deceit where the monsters wear masks of light and the darkness lurking inside a person is impossible to recognize from the outside. How does a girl who has everything going for her find herself in the middle of a deadly puzzle, forced to witness those she loves most commit acts of ultimate betrayal - a puzzle where boundaries blur and the difference between truth and lies is indiscernible?

Sutton is in a race against the clock to find a missing girl who may be the key. He will put it all on the line to make sure this monster doesn’t get the chance to kill again. Will he be too late, and is a physical death the only death one can suffer? Even if he saves her, will her life ever be the same?

3.0 out of 5 stars Did the job I wanted it to do but ... May 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I had just finished a lengthy tome that required effort to read so was looking for a breezy quick thriller read. Via my Amazon prime membership I could get this for nothing so gave it a try.

This book met my criterion and met it well. It's 428 pages but I completed it over two or three very easy days. It was nice that I felt compelled to pick it up to see where the story was going. Books in my experience are fast to read because they are mainly unchallenging dialog with little introspective or complex scene setting. This is the case here.

But ...

The characters are one dimensional including "Paul Sutton" - typically the cops are complicated and flawed and interesting. Paul's just a good cop. There are no twists in the story. While I know it's fiction I found it implausible that the very straight-up guy (no disclosure) would fall for the heroine who is, to put in indelicately, whacky. There's a chunk of kinky and not too wholesome sex thrown - "shades of grey" inspired?

Overall though I can't give it high marks even though it gets very high ratings on Amazon. Wonder why I'm so different?

5.0 out of 5 stars Draws you in April 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
RJ Belle has a talent for pulling the reader right in, from the first paragraph! One quality I especially appreciate is Belle's character development--the author creates rich characters and brings you inside their heads. This has the effect of keeping you engaged, caring about the characters, and wondering how the characters will tie together. I found myself excited to keep reading to find out what happens next!

The story line is intriguing and unique, and each aspect of the story weaves seamlessly from one to the next.

The author has clearly done a lot of research or is very knowledgeable on multiple topics, as evidenced by the details in the story to create a sense of realism. There is just the right amount of detail--nothing gratuitous, but enough to help the reader visualize being there, among the characters.

I am looking forward to the next in the series!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time to read this book May 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First I should say that I admire anyone who has the guts to write & publish a book That said, those same people should learn basic rules of grammar & punctuation before they publish. That's why there are editors & proofreaders. Ms. Belle really can't figure out when to use a comma; there are well over 50 instances of misused commas, mostly inserting them where they don't belong, but also omitting them where they should be, or using them where a semicolon should be. Apostrophes & hyphens also seem to be challenging for her. Perhaps she should check out Grammarly's online services before publishing her next book. There are times where the syntax is odd, making it difficult to determine what is being said. Also, it's Marine Corps (not Corp), whose (not who's), one's teeth clench (they don't clinch), the past tense of drag is dragged (not drug). My favorite was when sheik was used when she meant chic. That error made me laugh out loud. I could go on & on, but it's too painful.

But, even with all the errors mentioned above, the worst part is the writing -- it's just awful & amateurish. I wish I had paid better attention to the reviews before I wasted my time on this drivel. The mere mention of a comparison to 50 Shades of Gray, possibly the worst book I ever tried to read (but couldn't get past 40 or 50 pages), should have warned me. I skipped the gratuitous S&M scenes & skimmed much of the book. There was much opportunity to give insight into why otherwise intelligent women would allow themselves to be manipulated by a sadist. The only character I could tolerate was Sutton, & he deserves a better book. It's as though 2 authors wrote this mess -- the author who emulated "50 Shades" & someone else with a brain.

The book was a free download, so at least I didn't spend money on this, but it wasn't worth the time it took to read. Don't waste your time.

R.J. Belle has given us an intense romantic thriller that keeps you wanting more. The more you read the harder it is to put down. Even if you are not someone that is not much of a reader, this book will suck you in faster than you can close it. The character developement was perfect. The author make you feel for her characters or want to get to know them better.
I can't wait for the next one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw and disturbing. May 2, 2014
By Genny C
Format:Kindle Edition
The lead in for the book asks the reader if they "ever wondered" about the dark and light in people. The book MAKES
sure you wonder about that question. No saints here. Almost everyone has hidden wounds, hidden goodness and hidden evil. I ended up wondering about what the people around me in real life were capable of! Even, what I was capable of... A good read, compelling. A couple flubs with syntax and maybe word choice now and then, but I think that is part of the charm of this book. RJ Belle, write another!
