Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Intricate, sketchy watercolors draw the reader into a world of springtime flora and fauna as Mouse catches her biggest fish ever. She invites her friend Squirrel to a fish fry--"Bring a friend. Bring two or three!"--but as the invitation escalates the ensuing misunderstandings create hilarious havoc. Passing along Mouse's summons, each creature repeats her description of "a fish as B-I-G as me"; accordingly, the catch ends up bear-sized. When Mouse opens her door at the appointed hour, she is startled to discover " . . . friends by the dozen! / Friends by the scad! / More friends than Mouse / ever knew that she had." With a pinch of resourcefulness, she solves her social crisis in exemplary fashion. Though Koller's verse at times becomes ragged and doesn't scan, her characters' antics prove amusing and her word pictures occasionally charm--Mouse enjoys the brook's "ripples and dapples / that giggled and babbled." O'Neill's ( Mrs. Dunphy's Dog ) winsome cast and bucolic settings stylishly enhance the proceedings. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Delightfully rhythmic prose tells the story of Mouse, whose lazy-day fishing trip results in a grand catch ``as B-I-G as me,'' prompting her to invite Squirrel and a few other friends to dinner. Carried away by Mouse's enthusiasm, Squirrel invites Rabbit; Rabbit, in turn, invites Badger; Badger invites Deer; and so on. With each invitation, the description of the fish's size grows; when an enormous crowd shows up at the door, Mouse quickly revises her menu, ordering pizzas and serving the fish as an hors d'oeuvre. Soft, sprightly drawings are highlighted with many whimsical touches (the back cover shows Mouse engrossed in The Compleat Angler ); they perfectly complement a funny text that will be a joy to read aloud.

This book is out of print and frankly that surprised me. I was able to get a used copy and would encourage other to do the same. It is a delightful book for small children and is beautifully illustrated. It is a funny, wry tale of a dinner party gone astray (but saved) as one dinner invitation spawns dozens more. The gentle humor combined with the lovingly drawn watercolors, of forest creatures great and small, make this a must own.. As one of the many characters states, "What A Delight, Fish Fry Tonight."

This wonderfully illustrated book is delightful. Mouse's exuberance is catching; soon the friends she invited have invited others. It's a lovely tale of generosity, sharing and what can happen when a party gets out of hand! We've winnowed our children's books as they grow but have kept this one. Sorry to see it's out of print.
