Product Description

Editorial Review

Toys that grow with your child from infancy to toddlerhood are well worth their cost. The Classical Chorus Gym is one such toy, allowing your child to explore music at every stage of his development. As an infant, your child can lay on his back and bat at the hanging toys while the keyboard plays 10 different classical or nursery melodies, some with a children’s chorus. You can set the music to play continuously for up to 10 minutes, or only when your child successfully hits a toy, teaching him cause and effect. When your child learns to sit, the keyboard adjusts with him to the proper height, and then adjusts one more times to accommodate a standing or walking child. At these stages, you can set the music to play part of a song when your child presses a key or let your child experiment with scales and individual notes. The keyboard’s "singing" stars light up as music plays to further delight budding musicians. The Classical Chorus Gym requires three "C" batteries for operation. --Cristina Vaamonde

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Versatile, July 29, 2003
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
We bought this toy when our son was just two months old and he loves it. We are at five months now and he still gets a huge kick out of it.
There are so many ways to play! At first we'd lay him on his back an he would swat at the dangling rattles. They are bright and attention-getting. When he'd hit one, music would play and the lights would flash; it kept his attention. It didn't take much effort, and helped develop his coordination. There aren't many toys a two-month-old will play with. Then he learned that he could push the buttons to play and change songs.
The toy is re-positionable, so it can be used when the baby is laying down, with the rattles hanging. Tilt it at 45 degrees and sit him in a bouncer or car seat under it. At 90 degrees when he's standing (we still have to help him stand). And with a switch in the legs' configuration, it can be positioned so that he sits and plays.
There are (at least) 6 sound modes, ranging from one button playing a whole song, through pressing buttons that prompt a song to continue, to one button being a single tone (like a keyboard).
We love this toy and so does our son. It is good for just about everything except tummy time. We expect to get at least a year out of the developmental value.
Just another two things about it: it is very sturdy construction, but not a good toy to balance or lean on, and it is EASY to reconfigure.

Update: Our son is now 3.5 years and STILL plays with this toy. We put it away a while and when our daughter was born, brought it out for her, and he plays with it every chance he gets. We just change the settings to single notes for him and he still gets a thrill from it. It was completely worth our investment! And, of course, our daughter also loves it.]

Second Update: Our son (now 6) and daughter (now 4) played with this until last month, when we *finally* gave it to a friend's daughter, who also loves it. So far, hands-down, this toy has been well worth every penny we paid for it. So durable that even with six years of play between two kids, it's still as good as new, with just a few scuffs from wear.

5.0 out of 5 stars useful lying down, sitting or standing, May 7, 2003

We have the Sparkling Symphony Gym at home, and just got this gym at my baby's grandparents' house. I like this better because you can convert it for a baby to play lying down, sitting or standing, while the SSG works only lying down or standing (not sitting). My 7-mo-old is at the sitting stage so this is perfect for her, and will last quite a long time as she can use it while standing. The music is quite nice -- something you won't get sick of when listening to it over and over. It's very easy to put together. My baby seems to love it -- she whacks at the keys, smiles really big, and bounces her whole body up and down as she plays the piano.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining, March 19, 2003

This is a very entertaining and educational toy. I also like the fact that it allows you to interact wtih your baby. My 5-month-old daughter just lights up when I get down on the floor with her and pick out songs on the piano and sing to her. Yes, you really can pick out a few simple songs ("Mary Had a Little Lamb," etc.) on the piano when you have it set at #3.

My daughter does spend quite a lot of time playing with this. She really likes to watch the stars light up. She started out just batting at the hanging pieces, but now she actively holds onto them and is pleased when she can make noises with them. She will even reach up and bang on the keys every once in awhile.

There is a volume control on the back of this, but so far I haven't found it useful to have it on the louder setting. The low is just fine.

I am impressed with the way this activity gym converts for when she is older. I am looking forward to her playing with this for a long time.
